Lizards in Pakistan fall in 8 families, 32 genera and 103 species and subspecies. They show extensive adaptive radiations, invading different types of forests, deserts and grasslands. None of the lizards in Pakistan is venomous.

To shorten number of steps, the keys are written in a dichotomous way, original and subsequent sets of taxa are divided into equal units. Where distribution of useful characters among taxa does not allow realization of this method, choice has been made between two alternatives, each defined by one or more characters, taking care not to mask relationships among the taxa (i.e., as would be the case if similar appearing forms came out together but closely related were set apart). The keys show patterns of common character distributed among closely related taxa. Following keys are based on most easily observable morphological characters, needing at the most help of a good hand lens (A watchmaker's monocular lens or loupe is of great help in counting and observing scales, etc.).

Moreover, by this time the wash down from the Himalayas has filled the Tethys Lake, lying between the foot of the Himalayas and the peninsular India, replacing it by the Salt Range Plateau and the Indo-Gangetic Plains. A system of annual barometric vacuum was established over the subcontinent, bringing annual summer spells of torrential monsoon rains (Fig. 1). By the Pleistocene, the glaciation and deglaciation regulated rise and fall in the sea levels, created new pathways for dispersal of eastern, western and southeast Asian fauna and PAKISTAN political Fig. 1

Since description of most of the new taxa is published in Russian Journal of Herpetology, which is not available to most of the workers in Pakistan, present paper gives salient features of the new taxa to facilitate further work on blind snakes in Pakistan.

The Indus toad Bufo stomaticus is a common amphibian in the plains and sub mountains of Pakistan. Development and metamorphosis of the digestive system of tadpole of this species was followed in laboratory.

Recent description of several new species from Pakistan provide sufficient data to define new genera to accommodate them. The coincidental geophysical changes that occurred in the Palearctic and the Indo-Oriental regions are correlated to the present day pattern of distribution and speciation of the angular-toed geckos of the region. 2
