Carolyn Broe
Dr. Carolyn Waters Broe is an American conductor, violist, composer, and author. She is the Conductor and Artistic Director of the Four Seasons Orchestra of Scottsdale, Arizona. This excellent professional chamber orchestra was nominated in two Grammy categories for 2000. Carolyn Broe has soloed with orchestras in both California and Arizona. She has performed with many celebrities. Her Bachelor of Music is from Chapman University. Broe earned her Masters of Fine Arts in Music History from California State University Long Beach. She earned her Doctorate of Musical Arts from Arizona State University. She has taught for twenty years in several Maricopa colleges. Carolyn Waters Broe wrote her Masters thesis on "J.S. Bach's Treatment of the Viola in his Cantatas and Brandenburg Concertos". She wrote her Doctoral dissertation on "The String Compositions of Louise Lincoln Kerr: Analysis And Editing of Five Solo Viola Pieces". Broe has written and published many journal articles on women composers and viola composers. She is the first biographer of Louise Lincoln Kerr who was an Arizona composer and philanthropist. Carolyn Broe has produced the first CD of Louise Kerr's chamber music "Arizona Profiles". She has also published several journal articles on L.L. Kerr's music. She is the first editor and publisher of Kerr's music. Dr. Broe has conducted concerts of music by both male and female composers in Arizona. She was the first to conduct Kerr's symphonic tone poem for orchestra and soprano "Enchanted Mesa" in Europe for the Haydn Bicentennial Festival of 2009. Carolyn Waters Broe has recently published "Fifty Famous Composers For Kids Of All Ages" in 2021. This book contains the biographies of twenty-five famous male composers and twenty-five famous female composers. It has won the Mom's Choice Gold Award for 2021, two Finalist Awards in the International Book Awards in 2022, and the Book Excellence Awars in 2023. Carolyn Broe is currently teaching violin, viola, cello, and piano in her private studio in Scottsdale, Arizona. She is also the Principal Violist of the Scottsdale Symphonic Orchestra and the violist with the Four Seasons String Quartet.

Louise Kerr studied composition with two Columbia University theory professors in 1910 while she was attending Barnard College for Women in New York. She composed many pieces in the Southwest Impressionist style while she was living in Arizona. Kerr used Native American melodies and Southwest folk songs in her classically based music. She was also influenced by jazz composers while she was working for Aeolian Music Co, in New York City. These influences are reflected in her beautiful music.
