While a number of guides to historical research and writing and several historical methodology texts have appeared in the past several years, no single text accomplishes what Doing History: An Introduction to the Historian's Craft does. Through a unique two-part organization, authors Wendy Pojmann, Barbara Reeves-Ellington, and Karen Ward Mahar offer specific assignments to identify students' weaknesses and build their skills. They provide concrete examples of historical approaches and theories and detailed guidelines to help students complete their work within the constraints of the academic term. The text integrates the complexities of historical research and writing into a single, comprehensive narrative without compromising depth and breadth. Its lively and accessible writing style helps students grapple with sophisticated ideas while also avoiding the pitfalls that commonly entrap them as they learn to think and write as historians. The book's intellectually engaging discussions of the discipline of history in Part One: the Historian's Craft are enriched by solid examples of published scholarship. Students preparing research projects will benefit from straightforward guidelines for the research and writing process. In addition, the integrated workbook in Part Two: Doing History Workbook Exercises allows them to hone their skills with assessment exercises and skill-building assignments.

College trustee Caroline Borden, president Mary Mills Patrick, and alumna Halidé Edib were shaped by their connections with the college but in turn adopted public stances to shape an identity for their institution that fit their vision of its purpose. They converted a mission school into an American-Ottoman institution grounded in Protestant culture, American values, Ottoman cosmopolitanism, and a spirit of international cooperation. In the process, they intentionally obscured the missionary origins of the college and contributed to undermining the strength of women's missionary organizing on which they had built their success. They also built a strong foundation for the expansion of American culture among urban educated elites, Christian and Muslim, in the Near East.

New transnational approaches to the study of American missions abroad demonstrate that women missionaries were not a stock homogeneous group but a diverse group of individuals engaged in complex encounters with an equally diverse group of people in multiple settings. As scholars have highlighted the contributions of women missionaries to the projection of American Protestantism across the globe, they have increasingly recognized the importance of the cross-cultural connections that have new meanings of Protestant messages in local environments. Th is essay reviews the scholarship of the last forty years and indicates new avenues of research on American Protestant women in mission.
