Abstract

The purpose of this paper is to identify the explanatory variables of the changes of family labour in West German agriculture over the last thirty years. Labour stocks are distinguished into full and part time labour for both sexes separately. Demographic influences imply quasi autonomous changes of labour stocks which are quantified using cohort analysis. The rates of change exceeding this quasi autonomous component are regressed on explanatory variables. The most significant influence is found for the expected incomes in agriculture, the opportunity costs of family labour and general labour market conditions.
