- De Magistris, G. & Marenduzzo, D. (2015): An introduction to the physics of active matter
In these notes we provide an introductory description of the physics of active matter, focusing on theoretical aspects, and on some methods which are often used in the field. We discuss a selection of active systems, where activity comes from different microscopic sources (mainly self-replication, self-propulsion, non-thermal forces), and in all cases we focus on their statistical physics and emergent collective behaviour, which is often linked to underlying nonequilibrium phase transitions. We hope to convey the idea that this field is a fascinating growing area of research at the interphase between statistical, soft matter and biological physics, and that active matter systems can possess, in general, a much richer physics than their passive counterparts.

Purpose - The purpose of this study is to analyze how sentiment affects economic activity in Brazil. ... First, sentiment is an important factor for economic activity in Brazil, and its effect possibly occurs through the channels of consumption and investment, which are the two main components of economic growth. Second, sentiment affects economic activity in different ways in the short and the long term: in Brazil, although in the short-term, immediate shocks of sentiment may be confusing, the negative shocks from previous periods have a negative impact on economic activity. Third, the effect of shocks of optimism and pessimism on economic activity is asymmetric, and in the long run, only shocks of optimism have a significant and positive impact. Originality/value - The relationship between sentiment and economic activity is still a controversial issue in the literature and this study seeks to advance its understanding in Brazil.

In this chapter, we examine the role of NGO activism as a driver of sustainability. Such activism offers opportunities and poses challenges to firms; examining the role of activism is important to appreciate the broader question of what makes businesses more sustainable and more socially responsible. ... We then discuss which firms are more likely to encounter NGO activism as not all firms are equally susceptible to NGO activism. ... Finally, we discuss how firms may respond to NGO activism.

This study investigated whether neighbourhood vitality and walkability were associated with active ageing of the elderly. Immobility, activity engagement and physical activity were explored in relation with age, gender and walkability of the built environment. ... Results highlight the importance of vital environments for elderly active mobility as subpopulations residing in highly walkable neighbourhoods undertook more trips and spent more minutes walking than their counterparts.

The paper studies the nature and development of the concept of active labor market policies. Active labor market policies are a response to the challenges of structural unemployment, the high percentage of inactive persons and long-term unemployed persons in Europe and globally. They provide opportunities for more efficient use of human capital through the activation approach and create opportunities for adequate and mutually beneficial public employment policy solutions to respond to new challenges in the labor market at national and global levels.
