Welcome

This is the urbanism dot guide repository.

This guide is intended to be a way to get those mildly interested in any one or more urbanist issues further along in their journeys.

Unfortunately most actionable urbanist information is buried deep within hard to access government websites, chat rooms, mailing lists, and other places where you kind of already need to be into urbanism to get into it.

The goal is to use this website to eliminate that Catch-22 and educate with easily digestible, factual, and strongly informed material. Eventually turning some of our readers into active contributors to urbanist causes.

Writing Style

The style we're going for is:

  • Educational and informational
  • Inspirational, not shying away from emotions
  • Clear and concise
  • Factual
  • Strong informed opinions, not neutral
  • A focus on equity and fairness

Contributing

If you know something about an urbanist issue and want to contribute your knowledge to this project so that others can benefit from it then here's how:

If you've never used Github

  1. Create a Github account and login
  2. Check out our discussion section
  3. Comment on an open discussion with what you know, write a draft for an article, explain a concept or a law, tell us about the history of the issue, cite some references, link us to some useful materials, presentations, PDFs, graphs and charts. Any or all of these things are great!
  4. Or open your own discussion if you think something is missing!
  5. (Optional) Try adding your name, username, or pseudonym to the CONTRIBUTORS.md file. Or ask me to do it 😄

If you know how to use Github

  1. Do the same but make a PR against the dev branch and I'll forever be your friend 😄
  2. Install Hugo
  3. git clone https://github.com/zeezephyr/urbanism-guide.git
  4. npm ci (If you have nvm installed then run nvm use first)
  5. Start a server for local development: hugo server
