This is a Node.js script that downloads all media files (photos and videos) from a GroupMe conversation and saves them to the local filesystem. The script uses the GroupMe API to fetch the conversation history and download the media files. It also supports saving the chat history to a text file.
- Node.js v14 or later
- Yarn package manager
- A GroupMe API access token
- Clone this repository or download the source code.
- Install dependencies by running
yarn install
in the project directory.
- Obtain a GroupMe API access token from https://dev.groupme.com/.
- Run the script with
yarn start
. - Follow the prompts to select a conversation, choose an output directory, and specify whether to save the chat history.
- The script will download all media files from the selected conversation and save them to the specified output directory. If you choose to save the chat history, the script will also create a text file containing the full chat history.
Note: The script uses the GroupMe API to fetch the conversation history. There is a rate limit on the number of requests that can be made in a given time period, so extracting the chat history may take a while depending on how many messages there are.
While downloading media files and extracting chat history, the script will occasionally print out a randomly selected snippet of a conversation that took place within the last two hours. These snippets are styled with inline colors to make them stand out from other console output. The messages selected are based on the message ID, ensuring that each snippet is unique and different every time the script is run. If the selected message has other messages that were also within the two-hour window, they will be included in the output as well.
The following options are available when running the script:
--help
: Print help information and exit.--version
