In the file _config.yaml the variable date_format can be set to change the format of displaying dates in posts. This variable is referenced as site.minima.date_format in the files _layout/post.html and _layout/home.html but has to be referenced as site.plainwhte.date_format.
This is my first pull request, so please let me know if I've done anything wrong.
