rainbowduino

This library provides an interface to control Seeedstudios Rainbowduino, a 8x8 RGB LED driver based on the Arduino Project. This Processing library removes the need of writing any code for the device itself. Just upload the included firmware and add the library to your Processing IDE - you’re set up!

Features

  • complete API to control major function (to be extended, maybe changed as well)

  • 3 Bit Color support

  • Realtime update of the RGB LED Matrix.

  • Up to 10 Buffers which can written/read via serial and saved/loaded via EEPROM. (mind: due to 256kb memory only up to 10 frames can be stored by now).

  • Standalone mode with custom looping speed

  • Brightness control

Requirements

  • obviously a Rainbowduino with USB (Serial) connection (I2C not yet supported)

Installation

Download, unzip and put the extracted rainbowudino folder into the libraries folder of your processing sketches. Reference and examples are included in the folder as well. Open the data/rainbow/rainbow.ino file with the Arduino IDE and upload it to your Rainbowduino.

Usage

Basically, create an instance of the Rainbowduino class and init the Serialport - you’re ready to go. This is a simple example switches all LEDs to green, resets the rainbowudino and starts over again:

import processing.serial.*;
import com.rngtng.rainbowduino.*;

Rainbowduino device;

void setup() {
  device = new Rainbowduino(this);
  device.initPort();
}

void draw() {
  //send green frame
  device.bufferSetAt(0, new int[]{255,0,0,255,0,0,255,0,0,255,0,0,255,0,0,255,0,0,255,0,0,255,0,0});
  delay(1000);
  device.reset();
  delay(1000);
}

For more details, see the examples.

Development

Install ‘ant`:

‘brew install ant`

Execute build.xml:

‘ant -f resources/build.xml`

Future plans

* extend API, set ROW and set Pixel
* better color abstraction (CONST instead of numbers)
* support 12bit color
* I2C support
* use entities instead of Consts??
* add test (how to do this with processing??)

Changelog

v0.3.0

  • extract firmware to separate repository

  • update to Processign 2.0

v0.1.0

  • specified API

  • first implementation
