Hi Diego,

I'm a faculty at University of Virginia and we teach Raft in our cloud computing courses. Your materials have been such a great help and students clearly enjoy implementing Raft :)

I also tried to add some backgrounds when introducing you and Prof. John Ousterhout in that section. Is there a specific interesting story behind your development with Raft that I can share with future students? Thanks!

Chang

Thanks @changlousys. I just merged your update and have to run. I'll think about your question. One short story is on John's page https://web.stanford.edu/~ouster/cgi-bin/projects.php#raft , but he leaves out the bit where I was frustrated with trying to access ZooKeeper from C++, and the bit where Ali convinced me we could replace it with Paxos in a couple of weeks 😂.

Thanks Diego for the prompt response! That story is useful (and impressive), I'll talk about it with my students in class.

And if more memories come back to you later, welcome to share with us :)

Hi @changlousys, I came across an email reminding me that @johnousterhout did a keynote talk titled "The Story of Raft" at ICDCS 2021. I found a recording here: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=PfE8P4nwcY4. It's probably much longer than you wanted, but I hope you find it interesting!
