Making Sense of California Racial Identity Profile Act (RIPA) Data.

This repository is the first data project that will be offered by the [Racial Justice Coalition of San Diego](https:// so that they, a coalition of like-minded organizations, can understand local policing practices.

This project focuses on making RIPA data for the City of San Diego usable to RJCSD Coalition members to query, analyze, and output visualizations and reports to help inform others about their findings.

Data is found here (CTL+ click for new tab):

  1. Actions taken
  2. Contraband and/or evidence found
  3. Disability of persons
  4. Gender of persons
  5. Basis for property seizure
  6. Property seized
  7. Race of persons
  8. Basis for searches conducted
  9. Result of stop
  10. Stop details

These datasets are published what appears to be on a quarterly basis here.

The California Code of Regulations (CCR) details what RIPA should contain in CCR Title 11. Law, Division 1. Enforcement, Chapter 19.

A RIPA Board oversees related activities throughout the state. "The Racial and Identity Profiling Advisory (RIPA) Board was created “for the purpose of eliminating racial and identity profiling, and improving diversity and racial and identity sensitivity in law enforcement.”

We are a team of volunteers with Open San Diego committed to improving the flow of information and feedback between the public and our governement. Join us! We need coders, UX/UI researchers and designers, graphics artists, a business development team, and above all, partnerships with organizations working in our communities. We meet regularly in person and typically hybrid utilizing Zoom. Our Meetup page has details on when and where we meet.
