Introduction

OBS VNC Source is a VNC viewer integrated into OBS Studio. You can use this plugin to stream a desktop on your external computer.

Pros and Cons

Compared to other protocol such as NDI, VNC has such benefits.

  • Pros to use OBS VNC Source
    • Lightweight in terms of CPU usage on both server and client side.
    • MacOS has built-in VNC Server.
    • Small traffic for static contents such as text and images.
    • Built-in interaction to control mouse and keyboard.
    • No accumulated lags, just rendering when the new frame arrives.
  • Cons
    • Audio is not supported in VNC.
    • Quality is not stable. If network connection becomes slow, quality will be reduced.
    • Latency is not stable. The frame will be displayed as it arrives to the viewer. There could be a jitter.

If you are sharing movies or graphical games, I don't recommend VNC.
