Highlighted Changes
The suggested changes were relatively minor formatting, a few errors, and conforming to the PeerJ layout and instructions for particular content in given sections

• One major change was an update to the color palette for many of the figures. The original palettes were listed as 'colorblind safe' but upon additional review, the figures were improved with different colors that were also subjected to visual inspection under different simulated color-blinding conditions

Inclusion of Binary Files in support of targets pipeline
This compendium relies heavily on the R package targets for managing the analytical pipeline. The cached objects are not committed into the repository to keep the overall repository size low. A zipped binary of the _targets folder is provided here as a release binary.

This release represents all of the changes since the original manuscript was rendered and submitted to PeerJ.

Highlighted Changes
The peer reviews were generally positive and the decision from PeerJ was that the manuscript required minor revisions. In the end, more substantial changes were made to the manuscript in response to the reviews and additional considerations among co-authors.

• The title of the manuscript was changed to a simpler version that emphasized the focus on this spring season
• We reorganized much of the text to better follow the convention keeping methods, results, and discussion separate. The initial version tended to blend those sections.
• We added a figure to provide context for the spatial distribution of bio-logger deployments along with recent aerial survey effort
• All figures were revised to use more accessible palettes and, generally, to improve clarity and communication
• Any previous titles or subtitles within the figures were moved to the figure captions. Legends, axis labels, and direct labels were improved to ensure clear communication of key details
• The supplemental material was expanded to include two additional sections. Section 2 provides plots for each species that show the standard error around the haul-out predictions across the season and at select solar hours. Section 3 explores the use of downward surface solar radiation as a possible replacement for hour-of-day in the model.

This release represents the initial submission of the paper to bioRxiv

This is the version submitted to NOAA Fisheries for editorial review before publication to bioRxiv as a preprint and, then, to PeerJ for (hopefully) full peer review and publication.

Co-author comments and edits from v1.0 have been incorporated. This release will be provided to internal NOAA reviewers and to co-authors for additional review/comments prior to publishing a pre-print and submitting to journal
