Issue with date comparisons in javascript

I am reading in a start date and end date from a database and want to only keep the entries where the start date is on or before the current date and end date is on or after current date. It does not seem to be working correct.

`var StartDate = result.getString('StartDate').substr(0,10);
var EndDate =result.getString('EndDate').substr(0,10);
var curDate = DateUtil.getCurrentDate('yyyy-MM-dd');

if(StartDate != '' && EndDate != '')
{
//convert do date objects
var startDt = new Date(StartDate);
var endDt = new Date(EndDate);

    if(startDt <= curDate && endDt >= curDate)
    {
           //Code never comes in here
     }

}
`

If I sef the curDate to a specific date (var curDate = new Date('2021-07-01');) then it does work.

Actually just found it. var curDate = DateUtil.getCurrentDate('yyyy-MM-dd'); is returning a string. Had to convert it to a date object as well.
