Question | Is it possible to use Gamemoderun in Steam while Firejail is enabled? #6089

Hi,

I've been wanting to use 'gamemoderun' when I run my Steam games. I usually configures this by going into Steam >Game Options > Launch Options and add the line "gamemoderun %command%".

Because I use Glorious Eggroll Proton, I also have the following steam.local file:

# Add 'ignore seccomp' to Test WOT Blitz with Glorious Eggroll
# seccomp !process_vm_readv
#Used for WOT Blits with Proton > 7.2
seccomp.32 !process_vm_readv

But when I try to use gamemode run this way it will fail:

Nov 16 10:52:31 mani gamemoded[6932]: ERROR: Failed to register client [6931]: Permission denied

From reading the below threads it is not clear that it is currently possible to use gamemoderun with Firejail. Need a 2nd option. Thank you.

Gamerunmode failed with --noprofile.

I went ahead and re-tested with --profile=noprpfile and gamemoderun failed to active. So as you said, its a limitation.

steam-runtime --profile=noprpfile

Try the snippet from 4201 and add ignore noroot.

So I went ahead and changed my steam.local file to:

# Add 'ignore seccomp' to Test WOT Blitz with Glorious Eggroll

Steam now launches.

I can see some errors after launching World of Tank Blitz and Gamemoderun:

Remove the dbus related lines, steam has unrestricted dbus.

Where is libgamemode.so?

Commented out the dbus lines. The steam.local file looks like this:

Should I remove the "noroot" from the ignore line?

The 'libgamemode.so' file can be found in /usr/lib

Makr sure it works with --noprofile and then debug down by commenting in steam.profile line by line.

@rusty-snake Thanks for your feedback. I did some testing and got some interesting results:

Disable Firejail and confirm "gamemoded -s" reports active after launching World of Tanks Blitz.
Disabled firejail with "sudo firecfg --clean". Yes it Gamemoderun reports active.

❯ gamemoded -s
gamemode is active

Enable Firejail (sudo firecfg), and verify when you run "steam-runtime --noprofile" and launch World of tanks Blitz that gamemoderun is active:

❯ gamemoded -s
gamemode is inactive

I also noticed the below message always shows whether Firejail is enabled or not:

gamemodeauto: dlopen failed - libgamemode.so: cannot open shared object file: No such file or directory

So if I run "steam-runtime --noprofile" and Gamemoderun fails to go active, then I should not bother debugging by commenting lines out in the steam.profile file?

So it fails with --noprofile? Then try with --profile=noprpfile and if that fails, it is incompatible.
