Pitch

After unfollowing, posts from the hashtag/ person you unfollowed should disappear from your home timeline instead of persisting

Motivation

If I have unfollowed from the hashtag/ person, I likely don't want to have their posts in my timeline anymore, however any posts that were made before I unfollowed remain in the timeline indefinitely until new posts drown them

they should be removed after you refresh, i think? when you unfollow someone, the home feed worker has to remove those posts first. it doesn't happen automatically.

I think it does happen for unfollowed users (although I have to double-check), but not for unfollowed hashtags.

For me (with hashtags at least) this happened even when completely switching devices

This is something I've noticed as well, and I'm not sure if it there are other workarounds for it. Refreshing instances or browsers doesn't help at all.
