Project Open AAC Prototype

We are building an experimental system to enable AAC researchers to construct AAC device prototypes for research. The dream is a declarative system that runs in modern browsers.

Demonstrations

You can see a few simple and rough demos of the current capabilities by following these links:

These demos work in Safari 17+ but not in earlier versions.

In these demos you can switch between the developer mode and full-screen user-interface pressing the Alt or Option key followed by the d key.

The Layout tab allows modifying the visual design. The Actions tab allows modifying the response of the system to user inputs. The Cues, Patterns and Methods tabs allow defining the access method (i.e. Mouse, 2-switch scanning, etc.). The Content tab provides an overview of the content that has been loaded into the design.

Your changes will be persisted locally in your browser but are not saved externally.

Implementation

The key library is μhtml, a tiny library for building declarative and reactive user interfaces via template literals. We are trying to avoid requiring transpilation or fancy build steps; the code we write should be the code we ship.

We are using Mergerino with a version of the Meiosis pattern for state management.

We are using Vite to provide es6 compatible modules by prebundling code from npm. Vite also provides page reloading during development.

We are formatting code with Prettier and accepting its defaults.

We are documenting our Javascript with JSDoc and providing a few type hints to the TypeScript compiler for static checking of our Javascript code.

Key files in the src folder

  • index.html: tiny shell needed to get things started.
  • start.js: the Javascript starts here.
  • state.js: manages the application state using the Meiosis pattern.
  • render.js: handles rendering the app and calling functions afterward.
  • globals.js: global variables we need everywhere. I'm avoiding having to pass them down through so many levels.
  • data.js: abstracts the content as an array of objects.
  • db.js: abtracts the interface to the IndexedDB that persists the design.
  • eval.js: evaluate user entered expressions.
  • rules.js: implements the actions.

Key src folders

  • components/: code for all the components and some helpers.
  • css/: style for the site
  • dist/: output of the last build (ignored by git)
  • node_modules: npm manages these
  • thinking/: experiments and general thinking about how things should work.
  • types/: Added types to help the typescript LSP.

Additional files

deploy.sh: build the design and deploy it on github pages. publish.sh: build the production design and deploy it to github pages.

package.json: npm info package-lock.json: more npm info jsconfig.json: configure LSP for Javascript vite.config.js: configuration for the Vite build tool
