Hmm, actually I know of one smartphone that is compatible with the German ID card without any modification. It propably uses a different implementation of the NFC service. So the general note that you added is actually wrong.

The other problem is that I don't really want to make a list of compatible/incompatible cards, because this would not be a limitation of the app but instead is a limitation of the hardware.

Ok, then just make a note, that in principle the App itself works well, but most devices out there have that known limitation.
And just give an example which cards are using those extended length APDUs, without any warranty about completeness.
