eLife Search

This project is using elasticsearch to index content of the eLife articles and provide a full-text search for Journal.

To reliably recreate any issue experienced in CI or Prod you should continue to use builder.

Prerequisites for local development

Important: Keep in mind that docker is just used to improve the developer experience.

  1. Clone the project git clone https://github.com/elifesciences/search.git
  2. Rename config.php.dist on local to config.php

Starting the app

To bring up all services, run:

docker compose up

Alternatively, you can run without the SQS queue watcher by just bring up the app service:

docker compose up app

Importing and using search

The bin/console queue:import command imports items from API (in dev this is the api-dummy instance running in docker compose) and adds them into the queue. Run this in the docker environment with:

docker compose exec app bin/console queue:import all

Note: all here means all types of search content. Other possible values can be found in src/Search/Queue/Command/ImportCommand.php

If you are running the queue watcher, you should now see the results by accessing the search API on https://localhost:8888/search

If you are not running the watcher, inspect the queue count via

docker compose exec app bin/console queue:count

Testing

To run the tests:

docker compose exec app vendor/bin/phpunit

To run all the project tests (inc above tests and integration tests)

docker compose down queue-watcher
docker compose exec app bash project_tests.sh

NOTE: these integration tests require the queue watcher to not be running so the tests can control when items are consumed. This is why we make sure to stop watcher services.

To run the smoke tests:

docker compose exec app bash smoke_tests.sh

Local web app, external opensearch

Port-forward the journal--test instance of opensearch:

kubectl port-forward service/opensearch --address 0.0.0.0 -n journal--test 9200:9200

Modify $config['elastic_servers'] to point to journal--test opensearch in /config.php

'elastic_servers' => ['https://admin:[email protected]:9200'],

Run the app only:

docker compose -f docker-compose.app.yaml up --wait
