style: reformat code into a more common format #45

This applies a more common code format to all Java files. And also cleans up a few header comments which had been JavaDoc comments.

@dwalluck if you are ok with this, just merge it. If not, let's chat :)

This is the Oracle code conventions, right? That's what I tend to use. The original formatting had a lot of whitespace which is easy to forget.
