We will start out by looking broadly over the range of empirical methods you might consider using, and the assumptions and philosophical points of view they rely on. I also want to hear about the kinds of research problems you are working on or plan to work on, and the sorts of empirical questions they give rise to. Please be prepared to share this with the class, as it will help us to have fruitful discussions if we know a little about each others' research areas. I will use the information to customize the course a bit to emphasize things for which there is a clear need.

The lecture is based on the following sources. Do the readings yourselves after class to get all the nuance. I'm sure I didn't do them justice in my summary slides.

Great overview of research methods available for qualitative, quantitative, and mixed-methods strategies of inquiry. Discussion of criteria for selecting a research design.

Creswell introduces an important term we will use throughout the semester: "research design". Research designs are plans and the procedures for research that span the decisions from broad assumptions to detailed methods of data collection and analysis. This plan involves several decisions. The overall decision involves which **design** should be used to study a topic. Informing this decision should be the **worldview assumptions** the researcher brings to the study; procedures of inquiry (called **strategies**); and specific **methods** of data collection, analysis, and interpretation. The selection of a research design is also based on the nature of the research problem or issue being addressed, the researchers' personal experiences, and the audiences for the study.

This chapter describes a number of empirical methods available. It examines the goals of each and analyzes the types of questions each best addresses (more on questions next class). Theoretical stances behind the methods, practical considerations in the application of the methods, and data collection are also briefly reviewed; this follows closely the discussion in Creswell.

All too often, the words "theory", "theoretical framework," and "conceptual framework" are used interchangeably or without a clear understanding of the differences between these concepts. In this article, the authors set out to clarify the meaning of these terms and to describe how they are used in two common approaches to research: the objectivist deductive approach (from theory to data) and the subjectivist inductive approach (from data to theory).

In the lecture we talked about what doing research following each of these approaches is like. We will go over where "theory" fits in a next class.

Some scholars tend to describe research approaches as either inductive or deductive and to categorize research methodologies as either qualitative or quantitative. These perspectives are frequently conflated: qualitative research is equated with inductive approaches (from data to theory), and quantitative research with deductive approaches (from theory to data). However, inductive and deductive research approaches exist on a spectrum, and the research methodologies investigators use (be they quantitative or qualitative) may sit anywhere along that spectrum. This one-pager presents examples of approaches to research using qualitative and quantitative data that demonstrate the spectrum from inductive to deductive.
