Last year GitHub renamed the default branch from master to main, therefore when opening from GitHub without specifying a branch, the old default would be used, eventually throwing an error. Now it should work properly.

Should fix the issue
Perhaps, there's a way to figure if the branch exists or even fetch them and choose from
