Are you sure you have the right to use art, sfx and characters from share/gamedir/Castlevania share/gamedir/Carnage Beta1.1 share/gamedir/Doom ???

I'm pretty sure about Castlevania and Carnage mods, they have pixel
graphics that are pretty distinctive from the original games (plus there
are several games named Carnage), and SFX is a bunch of explosions and gun
sound effects, with no voice clips.

I'm not sure about Doom mod, it was copied from Gusanos, and it has a lot
of graphics and sound effects. I am not immediately recognizing the
graphics however, they do not look like textures from Doom or Doom 2, so I
think it's fine.

None of these mods contain characters, Doom mod human skin does not even
look like Doom marine, plus you cannot copyright the generic 'marine in a
helmet' character, especially if it's 16px-tall pixel art.

SFX are copyrighted and most likely come from Sound Ideas (Doom sounds for sure). As well as sprites, even explosion sprites.

I'm collecting cases of open source projects stealing assets

Do you use some kind of crawler, that compares images and SFX data? Could
it tell the resource file name inside the original game data?

OLX mods come from various totally random sources, most of them were done
like 15 years ago, when people did not care that much about snagging images
from some other game, however I still would like some references before
removing these mods from the repository.

Hey, I really would suggest to change the wording/motivation here:
"communism allows them to "borrow" assets..." sounds a bit like you are joking about us.
I think it would be better if your motivation is a community effort to fix these issues in the games. As far as I understand your project, you are collecting free game art. That would be the obvious thing to do. I can understand that some other project maintainers react angry because the way you put it, it sounds like you are more interested in the accusing of people than in helping them / fixing the issue. It even sounds a bit like you are threatening them with legal steps or so.
Here one suggestion, how people would probably thank you for pointing out the problem, if you formulate it like:
"Hey, I have seen that there are copyright problems in these files x and y. I have a collection of free assets here and I guess you can replace it by z."
You could even build a community where people could get a list of files which need to be fixed in various projects and they can help to fix them. That would be really cool.

I totally agree that we need to fix these problems. That is actually the reason why we cannot easily get an official Debian package. See #790 for some discussion.

Btw., we never really said anywhere explicitly that we are also releasing the assets under LGPL. That licence is only about the source code.
We just bundle the binaries together with assets. One solution would maybe to strip down OLX to some really free assets and improve the automatic downloading of assets in game.

Hi,
thanks for pointing out these issues, we should definitely remove assets that infringe on someone's copyright. It would be extremely helpful if you could give us the list of original files that are wrongly included in OpenLieroX if you can get that list easily. Even links to the original sources would help a lot.

I agree with Albert that the wording in your project is unfortunate. I would not be surprised some less calm people say bad words when you call them communists :)

Keep in mind that @saniv is neither the original copyright holder for any of the mentioned works, nor was he authorized by the copyright holders to act on their behalf.

@minexew, so you're waiting for original copyright holder to take down your repository and sue you?

@saniv don't worry about it

People related to the original Copyright Holder are now playing (and laughing a lot at) OpenLieroX like kids :)) Most probably. In 21th century copyright is only issue if it becomes critical or business critical abuse. Even piracy is used as marketing tool today :)

I'd close the issue as the whole matter is based on report's "feelings". This is not how a proper issue looks like - it is more like trolling than anything else.
