This is a sample PrayerTimes App with shared business logic, initially written for a talk given for GDG MENA Digital Days on August 31st, 2021. The slide deck (10 slides, short since the talk was mostly live-coding) can be downloaded from here.

It uses the kotlin_multiplatform branch of adhan for shared PrayerTime calculation logic.

It was later modified to support more platforms as part of a talk, given in Arabic, at Droidcon Egypt in 2022. I am hoping to re-do this in English in the near future, at which point I'll update the links here as well.

Features

  • shared business logic between all platforms
  • shared rendering layer for Compose between Android, JVM Desktop, and iOS

Specific Implementations

  • Android (using Jetpack)
  • iOS (using SwiftUI)
  • iOS (using Compose)
  • desktop JVM (using Compose)
  • web (using Compose)
  • macOS
  • watchOS
  • implementation for command line (macOS, Linux, and Windows (untested)).

Setup

  1. Obtain a Google API key (see here for details).
  2. Update shared/src/commonMain/kotlin/app/salah/Secrets.kt with your key.

On Android, open in Android Studio (Arctic Fox or above). On iOS, open the xcworkspace file in Xcode.

Running

  • for web-compose: ./gradlew jsBrowserRun
  • for desktop-compose (jvm): ./gradlew :desktop:run
  • for Apple (iOS, macOS, watchOS) - in Xcode, choose the target and then run

Command Line App

macOS (arm64)

# Build the application
./gradlew macosArm64Binaries

# Run it
./shared/build/bin/macosArm64/releaseExecutable/shared.kexe "Dubai"

Linux

For Linux, you need the Curl library's development headers. On Ubuntu, for example, you can run apt install libcurl4-openssl-dev (note that you need a modern version of Curl, example 7.85.0-1).

# Build the application
./gradlew nonNativeAppleBinaries

# Run it
./shared/build/bin/nonAppleNative/releaseExecutable/shared.kexe "Dubai"
