Non-native marine species in Alaska's Bering Sea

A collaboration between the Alaska Center for Conservation Science (University of Alaska Anchorage), the U.S. Geological Survey Alaska Science Center, and NOAA's Alaska Fisheries Science Center. Major funding was provided by the North Pacific Research Board (project #1523).

Project summary

This repository contains R scripts that predict temperature and salinity suitability for non-native species in the Bering Sea.

We evaluated suitable temperature and salinity conditions for a) year-round adult survival, b) weekly adult survival, and c) weekly reproduction. We consider two study periods: current (2003-2012) and future (2030-2039). Our models use species-specific thresholds obtained from the literature and ocean conditions predicted by three Regional Ocean Modeling Systems (ROMS).

File dependencies

  • Species_Tolerances.csv [This file contains the summary data on temperature and salinity requirements for the marine invasive taxa considered]
  • ports.csv [This file contains WGS84 coordinates and IATA abreviations for ports within the study area]
  • beringSeaContinentalShelf.shp [Shapefile of the Bering Sea continental shelf that determines the extent of our study area]
  • Files from the Bering 10K ROMS. We obtained the files from Axiom Data Science

With the exception of the ROMS files, these data are available on our data repository.
