Getting Started

Creating a Translation or Narration

The first step to creating a project is to set up a translation. A translation is a pairing of a Source language and a Target language. A narration should select the same language for Source and Target.

Only the languages with content available to narrate or translate are listed as Source languages. To add Source languages, first follow the steps in the Importing Content section of the guide.

To assist with finding a language, filter options can be set to hide languages of various regions. Additionally, in the filter menu, you will find the option to toggle "Show in English" which will switch between the Anglicized name and Localized name of a language.

Creating a Project

Once a Translation has been created, a project can be added to that translation by clicking the "Add Project" button.

From there, you will find a list of books available to record or translate. The books listed are according to a particular resource for the Source Language. To select another resource (for example, Open Bible Stories), open the filter menu and select the desired resource. The filter option also allows for sorting the books alphabetically, or by book order.

Working on a Project

The goal of Orature is to help you work towards recording one complete chapter recording for each chapter of a book. This may involve the management of various takes before arriving at a satisfactory final recording, and additionally (in the case of translation), may first prefer breaking down the chapter and translating verse by verse.

Narration

For narration, narrators may prefer to simply stay at the chapter level (If you would prefer to narrate verse-by-verse, please refer to the Translation section).

To get started, click on the "Record Chapter" button, to be brought to the recording page. The full chapter source text will be available to you, as well as source audio if imported. The volume meter on the right hand side is active to inform you about the microphone volume level. To begin recording, press the microphone button at the bottom center of the screen, followed by the pause button when you are finished. You can resume by pressing record again, or, to finish the recording, press "Continue" at the bottom right.

Once you have made a chapter recording, an audio player will now appear on the chapter page corresponding to the Selected Take. The Selected Take is always the most recently interacted with recording. To Select another take, click on the "View Takes" button at the bottom left. This will take you to a page displaying the chapter text and all recorded takes. To select a different take, press the button with the Up Arrow icon.

Other actions on the chapter page include "Edit" and "Place Markers." Both of these actions are applied to the current Selected Take

On subsequent Chapter Recordings, the curent Selected Take will be provided as Target Audio to assist you with revisions.

Translation

To get started with a verse by verse translation, click on "Begin Translation." This will open the first verse to record. Verse text can be found on the left hand side, and, if imported Source Audio will be available below the text. Playback speed can be increased or slowed down by opening the playback rate menu on the audio player. For instructions on importing Source Audio, please refer to the guide on Importing Content.

When ready to record, the "Record" button will take you to the recording page, where both Source Text and Audio will still be available. On completing a recording, the "Continue" button will return you to the Verse page. A new take card will be created and automatically selected. More takes can be recorded, or you can navigate to the next recording. To return to the Chapter page, click on the Chapter breadcrumb at the top of the navigation bar.

Once a verse has been recorded for all verses, the "Compile" button will be available to compile all selected verses into a chapter recording. To quickly replace a take of a verse, you can expand a verse and select an alternate take with the Up Arrrow button. Compile will then create a new chapter using the replaced verse take. Or, in case you forget to Compile, exporting the project (covered in the Export Options section) will automatically compile the verse takes you selected
