this coming

English

[edit]

Adjective

[edit]

this coming (not comparable)

  1. (set phrase) (of dates, especially days of the week) the immediate next, rather than the one belonging to the following week (year, etc.).
Remember, it isn't this coming Wednesday/weekend, but the one after.

Usage notes

[edit]

Used instead of next to disambiguate between the different possible senses of that adjective (as when, for example, if one says "next Saturday" on a Thursday, it may not be clear whether the Saturday in two days or in nine days is meant). Can also be used with months, holidays, etc.: when you said "next December," did you mean this coming December or December of next year?
