Particularly: “The palatalization implies that this word came from *-dəmʔ. The onset shift from Middle to Modern Vietnamese is irregular but maybe compare Vietnamese râm < Middle Vietnamese dâm? Was this shift in both cases occurs when Middle Vietnamese ‹dĕ›, ‹d› and ‹r› had merged as [z] in Northern Vietnamese (i.e. it's actually purely orthographical)?”
