Etymology

From Proto-Vietic *-lɛːmʔ (to lick), from Proto-Mon-Khmer *(c)liəmʔ ~ *(c)limʔ (to lick), with obvious imitative origin. Cognate with Khmu [Cuang] krliəm ("to lick the lips"), Khasi jylliem, Bolyu ljim³¹.

Compare also Old Chinese (OC *l̥ˤ[i]mʔ) (B-S) (SV: thiểm), Chepang लेम्‍ह्‌सा (lem‍h‌, to lick), Dumi lem ~ ljam ("tongue").
