[edit]From Middle Low German vrācht, vrēcht, a compound of Old Saxon far- and ēcht (“property”), from Proto-Germanic *aihtiz (“property”), cognate with Danish æt. German Fracht and Dutch vracht are also borrowed from Low German, and English freight and French fret (hence Spanish flete) are borrowed from Middle Dutch vrecht.
