[edit]Borrowed from German Forelle, from Proto-Germanic *furhnō. The fish is spotted, hence the name. Compare Sanskrit पृषत् (pṛṣat, “spotted”), Ancient Greek περκνός (perknós), πέρκη (pérkē).
