Etymology 1
[edit]Inherited from Old Spanish esfuerço, equivalent to a modern esforzar + -o. The Old Spanish etymon is similarly derived from esforçar, from a Vulgar Latin *exfortiāre, from *fortiāre, from fortia (“heroic actions”). Compare Portuguese esforço, Catalan esforç, French effort, Italian sforzo. Cognate with English effort.
