[edit]Equivalent to be- + stå (“to stand”). From Middle Low German bestān, from Proto-Germanic *bistandaną, *bistāną (“to stand by”), cognate with English bestand, German bestehen, Gothic 𐌱𐌹𐍃𐍄𐌰𐌽𐌳𐌰𐌽 (bistandan).
