Usage of the word tramp.

[edit]

The meanings ‘homeless person’ or ‘foot traveller (usually hiking) is a global usage. However the meaning ‘promiscuous woman / slut / prostitute’ is only acceptable in American English (North American and Canada) and usually showing disapproval, according to Longman, Cambridge, Oxford etcetera dictionaries. “(derogatory) A disreputable, promiscuous woman; a slut. [from 1922]
Synonyms: see Thesaurus:promiscuous woman
I can't believe you'd let yourself be seen with that tramp.
Claudia is such a tramp; making out with all those men when she has a boyfriend.”
It should be marked as ‘American English’ MarcoToa 0425 (talk) 05:12, 29 November 2024 (UTC)Reply
