Cognate with Vedic Sanskrit ऋश्य (ṛ́śya, “antelope”), Lithuanian elnias (“deer, stag, hart”), Russian оле́нь (olénʹ, “deer”), Russian лось (losʹ, “elk”), Ancient Greek ἔλαφος (élaphos, “deer”), Old Armenian եղն (ełn, “hind”).
