From Old Japanese. Compound of (ma, eye, ancient combining form of modern (me)) +‎ (to, gate, opening), in reference to an opening for looking through.[1][2][3]

Alternatively, may be a compound of (ma, gap) +‎ (to, gate, opening).[1][3][4]

First cited in some references to a text from 794,[5] and also found in the Man'yōshū of 759.[6]

The Microsoft Windows sense is a semantic loan from English Windows.
