From Proto-Southwestern Tai *taːjᴬ² (“to die”), from Proto-Tai *p.taːjᴬ (“to die”). Cognate with Northern Thai ᨲᩣ᩠ᨿ, Lao ຕາຍ (tāi), Lü ᦎᦻ (ṫaay), Tai Dam ꪔꪱꪥ, Shan တၢႆ (tǎai), Thai ตาย (dtaai), Khamti တၢဲႈ, Phake တႝ (tay), Ahom 𑜄𑜩 (tay), Zhuang dai. Compare Proto-Be *ɗaːjᴬ¹, Proto-Austronesian *(m-)atay (“to die”).
