Inherited from Middle Hindi موتی (mvty /⁠motī⁠/) (c. 1503), from Sauraseni Apabhramsa मोतिउ (motiu), from Prakrit 𑀫𑁄𑀢𑁆𑀢𑀺𑀅 (mŏttia), from Sanskrit मौक्तिक (mauktika).
