[edit]From Proto-Polynesian *kano (compare Maori kano, Tahitian ʻaʻano and Tongan kano),[1] from Proto-Oceanic *kanon (“flesh; kernel”) from Proto-Malayo-Polynesian *kan-ən from Proto-Austronesian *kaən-an (“food, cooked rice”) from Proto-Austronesian *kaən (“to eat”) (thus doublet of ʻai).[2] Also a doublet of ʻanoʻano.[2]
