After Rabih's defeat by the French, Dikwa came under German control in 1902. Following World War I, it was administered by the British under a League of Nations mandate until Nigeria's independence in 1961. The Dikwa Emirate was established in 1901, with its capital later moved to Bama in 1942. Today, Dikwa faces significant humanitarian challenges due to ongoing insecurity.
