CATTEGAT, or KATTEGAT, a gulf of the North Sea, between North Jutland to the west, Sweden to the east, and the Danish islands of Zealand, Funen, etc., to the south; and by joining the Skagerrak on the west and the Little and Great Belts and the Sound on the east, forming the middle link in the chain of waters connecting the Baltic with the North Sea. It is about 150 miles from north to south; its greatest breadth about 90. It is difficult of navigation, being not only shallow toward the shores, and irregular in depth, but obstructed by several sand-banks, and the adverse winds which often prevail here increase the danger. The Cattegat is noted for its herring-fishery. It contains the islands Samsöe, Anholt, Lessöe and Hertzholm.
