Originally based upon the Wasteland computer role playing game, Fallout is a role-playing games (RPGs)'s franchise published by Interplay and, later, Bethesda Softworks. Although set in and after the 22nd and 23rd century, its story and artwork are influenced by the post-war culture of 1950s America, and its striking combination of hope for the promises of technology and lurking fear of nuclear annihilation. In 2024, a TV series debuted.

Mayor Killian Darkwater: The name's Killian. Killian Darkwater. I'm the mayor of this fine town. And who might you be?

Mayor Killian Darkwater: Oh, you obviously have me confused with someone who has to take your lip. Why don't you come back when your mama teaches you some manners.

Harold: Well, I was a trader. Did pretty good making a circuit between survivors. Lost a lotta good people, though.

Harold: A robot crane crashed into us. Last I saw of Grey, he was flying through the air into some sort of acid bath. I was in bad shape and... well I passed out.
Vault Dweller: And you never saw Grey again?
Harold: No, you idiot. I just told you I never saw him again didn't I?

Vault Dweller: You talk like an idiot.
Loxley: It's a little gift from me Da and Mum. Actually, a few generations before that. Do you like it?

Nightkin: Leave me or die!

Vault Dweller: So what do you want me to do?
Butch: Simple. Find out who's doing it, and tell me. Or take 'em out. It makes no damn difference to me. Just get that job done!

Butch: Well there's uh... something, but I never listen to those rumors.

Vault Dweller: Well, I found out who's taking the caravans.

Vault Dweller: Can you give me the big picture on Junktown?
Lars: Me and my men work for Killian Darkwater. We keep some order in this town, dealing with all kinds of the murderers, thieves, and other scumbags who come in from the desert. If you want my advice, you'll also stay away from Gizmo. That fathead runs a crooked operation, but we just haven't been able to prove anything. He and his lockeyes the Skulz are going to take the fall sometime soon, if Killian has anything to say about it.
Vault Dweller: What a bummer. No fun here at all.
Lars: Look, buddy my job here is to keep the peace, and if I have to break a few heads to do it, then a few people are going to be hurting. So just watch it.

Mayor Killian Darkwater: Listen thanks for saving my life. It's a mighty brave thing to do. Looks like we got ourselves a situation here. I know Gizmo's behind this, but I need proof. You interested in helpin'?

Gizmo: What do you want? I'm a busy man.
Vault Dweller: I'm here to talk about the attempt on Killian's life.

Mayor Killian Darkwater: That's the first time I've been happy to hear his voice. Thanks, friend. Now, time for you and me to take care of the other business.
Mayor Killian Darkwater: Well, thanks again. Oh, listen, I'm gonna take the guards and run Gizmo and his cronies out of town. I could use another gun. You up for it? Might be good for a laugh.
Vault Dweller: Sure. It'll be worth it just to see him try to walk more than ten feet.
Mayor Killian Darkwater: Go to Lars at the guard station. He'll fill you in. And listen, this town owes you... a lot.

Children of the Cathedral Guard: What do you want?
Vault Dweller: What’s this place about?
Children of the Cathedral Guard: Something called a Holy Flame. Don't listen to this bullshit, it will rot your brain!
Vault Dweller: Man, are these people ever stupid!
Children of the Cathedral Guard: Yeah. It's a good thing they aren't paying me to agree with them. Holy Flame, my ass!

Kalnor: You'd better put that away. Junktown is a friendly place, friend, and we want to keep it that way.
Vault Dweller: Put what away?
Kalnor: Your weapon, idiot. Killian won't take your arms away, but you'd better damn well keep them in your holster.

Vault Dweller: You seem well educated. What are you doing here?
Razlo: Doc Morbid in Junktown taught me some. And just because we live in stone huts, does not mean we are less intelligent or educated. Have a nice day.

Vault Dweller: So where is this Master?
The Lieutenant: He's busy with the Children of the Cathedral. They actually consider us gods. But then, who can blame them?

Vault Dweller: So what's the quest?
Cabbot: You have to go to the ruins of the Ancient Order. That's south of here. Uh, you've gotta go inside and bring back something that proves that you were there.
Vault Dweller: No way in hell.

The Lieutenant: Now what do we have here? I've been told you wish to divulge information of the utmost importance. I do hope so.
Vault Dweller: On one condition.
The Lieutenant: Conditions? How delightful. Go ahead, amuse me with your... condition.
Vault Dweller: Put a bag over your head so I can stand being in your presence.

Vault Dweller: I can't win. I'll join you.
The Master: Excellent. Your talents will be useful. But first, you must tell me everything about your Vault.
Vault Dweller: Why?
The Master: I will conquer it and turn all those pure strain humans into mutants. They will give me the army I need to bring peace to the entire wasteland.

Dane: Master! I shouldn't have said anything. I heard the Nightkin crying an felt sorry for it.

Vault Dweller: Who is the master?

Children of the Cathedral Guard: I've been trying to get a good read on these guys for weeks. At first I thought they were fools, but now... I ain't so sure. They're organized, and they've got a plan. I can smell it!

Children of the Cathedral Guard: What do you want?

Vault Dweller: Then there won't be anything exciting in town.

Overseer: You're back! And in one piece! How goes the search?
Vault Dweller: Not good, but I noticed the radiation count is low. Why don't we just move the people out of the vault?
Overseer: We've debated this before. You ought to know now, after being out there! You think the rest of us could survive that? Besides, I'd be out of a job! I'm management! It's not like I know how to do anything useful!
Vault Dweller: We agree on that.

Vault Dweller: Who are the Elders?
Maxson: Well you see there's four of them and that's about all they can ever agree on. They can't even agree if they want to piss, much less pick a pot to piss in.

Vault Dweller: Could you tell me about the Brotherhood's history?
Sophia: Well, it's good to see someone interested in our great history. Unlike others around here. Here you go. This is a disk of some of our earliest writings.
Vault Dweller: I don't care about this crap. Thanks for nothing.

The Lieutenant: Oh this is excellent you know I actually doubted my officers when they said they'd captured a prime normal. It is so nice to see you.

The Lieutenant: I do so admire your will. Guards, take him back to his cell and get him ready for dipping. He'll tell us where his Vault is when he is one of us.

Myron: The contaminated version acted like an amphetamine when ingested. Little side effect. Don't ask. It's, uh, technical.
Chosen One: So...did you somehow get a hold of this protein extract?
Myron: I din't have to. When they first screwed it up, they contaminated tons of that shit. So, rather than ditch it, they fed it to their brahmin herds to try and recoup their losses.
Chosen One: So you used brahmin shit as fertilizer for the shrooms, except the pre-war protein contamination gives whatever shrooms grown in brahmin shit...certain extra ingredients?
Myron: Close...
Chosen One: Yes...?
Myron: See, we started experimenting with the brahmin shit as fertilizer for the shrooms, except get this: then, we noticed slaves working the fertilizer vats were getting high from the fumes...
Chosen One: So the fumes were enough to produce the effect?
Myron: Riiiight.
Chosen One: I thought so.
Myron: By putting tons of brahmin shit in the vats, we found out the fumes give off more than enough of a kick. Eureka. Literally. 'Course, we had to test to get the mix right...

Think about that for a moment. No more radiation sickness, no more mutated crops, no more struggling just to stay alive. Finally... hope. Isn't it worth taking a risk to give that hope to people?

James: I'm sorry, but that's-
Col. Autumn: Furthermore, you are to assist Enclave scientists in assuming control of the administration and operation of this facility at once.
James: Colonel - is it colonel? -, I'm sorry but the facility isn't operational. It never has been. I'm afraid you are wasting your time here.
Col. Autumn: Sir, this is the LAST time I'm going to repeat myself. Stand down at once and turn over control of this facility.
James: Colonel, I assure you that this facility will not function. We have never been able to successfully replicate test results.
Col. Autumn: (kills a scientist) I suggest you comply immediately, sir, in order to prevent any more incidents. Are we clear?
James: Yes, colonel. I'll do whatever you want, there's no need for more violence.
Col. Autumn: Then you will immediately hand over all materials related to this project and aid us in making it operational at once.
James: Very well, give me a few moments to get the system online.

Life is absent where it isn't hanging on by a thread. Few buildings remain standing, most reduced to piles of rubble. In the distance you can see what was downtown Washington, D.C., a standing but wrecked Washington Monument dominates the skyline as the tallest remaining structure. You can already tell this game is going to be extraordinary.

The war did more than crumble the United States government and its infrastructure. It left behind a reminder of man's transgressions. The effects of radiation are felt everywhere, none more strongly than in the water. Thirst and desperation are constants in Fallout 3 and you won't know the true definition of either until you drink irradiated water from a toilet to gain a few health points. Water and food can heal you, but almost everything has been poisoned by radiation. Water and food can heal you, but almost everything has been poisoned by radiation. You'll have to use medicine to manage the levels of radiation you take in from eating, drinking or wandering into hot zones, creating an unending give and take that underscores the struggle for survival that everyone you meet faces.
    Such pressure could make even a good man do bad things. For those who are already bad, it provides the excuse to do great evil and take advantage of the weak. You will have to decide where you fit in this world. If you want to be good, there are beggars to give water to and people that need a champion. If you want to be bad, well let's just say that you won't have any problem finding places to ruin lives. If you haven't figured it out yet, this is not a game for kids or anybody with a developing moral compass. Foul language is pervasive and that is often the smallest sin on screen. Fallout 3 shies away from sexual content and giving you the option to kill little kids, but that's about it. The world is filled with twisted people who do nasty things and you yourself are often presented with the option to perform terrible, terrible acts. Several times while playing as an evil character I found the situations so extreme and wholly wicked that I had trouble taking the low road.
  • Superficially, the world that Bethesda has created for Fallout 3 seems like Oblivion with a Fallout paint job. It has that same go-anywhere-pick-up-anything freedom, but where Oblivion often felt sparse and desolate, Fallout 3's world is teeming with the sort of mangled life you'd expect from a post-apocalyptic wasteland.
    Even when roaming the barren wastelands outside major cities, you're never more than a few meters from a burned-out car or a knife-wielding raider. Yes, it's something we should expect from these open-world role-playing titles — yet it's done so well in Fallout 3 that it feels novel and immersive.
  • Fallout 3's story seems like a similarly well-crafted re-creation of the classic tales of the first two Fallout games, at first, but after a few hours longtime fans will realize that the whole thing feels a bit off. It took me nearly 15 hours of gameplay to figure out what exactly felt wrong.
    And then it dawned on me: Nothing in Fallout 3 is funny.
    Certainly, you'd expect a post-apocalyptic wasteland to be depressingly bleak. But what the first two Fallout titles did so well was to show that even in the darkest of times, the irreverent human spirit remains.
  • It's a wasteland, but we want to have enough density, and points of interest, clutter, trash in the destroyed world. So at first glance it's barren, it's empty looking, but pretty soon after exploration you'll find every ruined house has something to poke your nose into, there's a raider camp set up over by this school--there's a lot of density.
  • Aesthetically and aurally, Fallout 3 is amazing.
    The entire world is decrepit and properly nihilistic, the characters you encounter are simultaneously dirty and pretty and every sound -- from gunshots to the barking of attack dogs -- sounds simply fantastic.

The King: [in a distinctive accent] Near as I can tell, it was some sort of religious institution. Oh, I know it says "school" out front, but everything in here seems to be related to the worship of some guy back in the day. People used to come here to learn about him. To dress like him, move like him. To be him. If that's not worship, I don't know what is.
The Courier: Tell me about the Kings.
The King: We're different than other gangs, and not just because we dress better. We're not just a group of thugs looking for our next fight. The Kings are about an idea, you see? Where every man is free to follow his own path, do his own thing. Where every man is a king in his own right.
The Courier: So why isn't every man in Freeside in your gang?
The King: The kids love us, but the old-timers tend to shy away and keep to themselves. They probably couldn't pull off the look, anyway. As for the others, some people just plain don't respect others, and that's a no-no. If there's one thing I won't tolerate, it's lack of respect.

The Courier: How about I go find dear Daniel and shake the information out of him?

Tactically, it's simple - kill and kill some more. I may have a few surprises in store for the NCR, but that won't concern you.
The Courier: It will be an honor to fight for the Legion.
Caesar: Good. "In hoc signo taurus vinces." Report to Legate Lanius immediately. He'll brief you on the plan of battle. Come back victorious- or don't come back.

Legate Lanius: And who are you to come before me? You bear the insignia of the Bear, yet you do not wear it as a soldier of the West wears it.
The Courier: What, Caesar giving orders beyond the grave now?
Legate Lanius: Caesar's will is the will of the Legion. And the West- all beneath the flag of the Great Bear exist to test the will of the Legion. The West shall fall as the East fell, and all the tribes that stretch to the setting sun shall bear the mark of the Legion.
The Courier: Maybe you're willing to listen to reason.
Legate Lanius: I see you fight with words, like all beneath the flag of the Bear. Let us hope your skill with weapons proves greater.
The Courer: This battle is decided, that's why I'm here.
Legate Lanius: So, you seek quarter? Terms of surrender? Our roads into NCR are hung with the bodies of those who tried to "negotiate" with us. Save your speeches. We will take the Dam and move forward until our feet crush the setting sun beneath them.
The Courier: Move forward? The Legion spent years trying to take Hoover Dam.
Legate Lanius: Hoover Dam has never seen the massed strength of the East. Only Legates such as Graham... who deserved the fire Caesar blessed him with. Now I am here, and make markers of your people as the Legion carves its way West.
The Courier: And then what of the East?
Legate Lanius: You speak in circles. What of the East? I am the East, and I will prove it this day.
The Courier: If you need all the East to crush the West...
Legate Lanius: The victory here shall be swift. Our forces shall take the dam, secure it, then build a road west on the bodies of the NCR. The East will hold. Once across the Colorado, nothing to rival Hoover Dam remains.
The Courier: Well... except Vegas.
Legate Lanius: Vegas will fall.
The Courier: Really? I hope you're not counting on the Omertas to help you.
Legate Lanius: I count on no one.
The Courier: Good, because the Omertas' plan was stopped, Vegas is as strong as ever.
Legate Lanius: A plan by Vulpes... Treachery is a weapon one should never rely on. I can only hope that the Omertas died when their treachery was exposed; to have the plan succeed only would have sullied the Legion. It does not matter. Victory shall be ours. It shall be swift, and it will be honest, purchased with blood.
The Courier: It is not the strength of the West that will slow you, it is their weakness.
Legate Lanius: Your weakness? You seek to thwart me by claiming that the Legion is too strong for you?
The Courier: NCR's weakness is it's size- it'll take your entire army to hold the West.
Legate Lanius: That does not mean we would not succeed.
The Courier: Eventually- but moving your whole army West means losing the East. You can't hold both.
Legate Lanius: [considers] The East was a hard-fought campaign. Even now, Caesar drew too much of the Legion's blood needed there for... this. Hoover Dam is but a place. I will not have it become the gravestone of the Legion, whether quickly, or slowly, as you describe, by attrition.
The Courier: There is victory in wisdom, Legate.
Legate Lanius: As for wisdom... there is wisdom in your words, Man of the West. Know that I shall return East. I shall not remain there forever. On that day, the strength of the Bear shall be tested. If the West is one day filled with ones such as you, perhaps it will be a worthy fight, indeed.
The Courier: If you feel that war matters that much, perhaps you will see differently in time.

About Fallout: New Vegas

  • Brian: FNV does indeed have a Googie-style influence. We wanted to give the audience a real sense of Vegas and the time period, so we felt it was important to go that route and partially it's what anyone would expect Vegas to be. We pulled (just a little) from the 60s here and there as well, but Goog,ie is what influenced us most.
Joe: The Art Deco movement started in the early 20s, during a period when many of the eastern cities were prosperous and growing. As a result it really influenced the skylines and the design movement moved to other areas, vehicles, furniture and appliances. So in many ways it captures the optimistic 50s period for which the Fallout franchise is known for, it nicely contrasts against the dystopian wasteland.
The west coast development really expanded during the automobile revolution and so not only was it a different time period, the nuclear age, but cities where now designed for folks traveling by car rather than by foot.
Since the real strip didn't really get fully developed until the early 50s, most of the hotels where designed in the Googie architecture style, a futuristic "Meet the Jetsons" type of architecture. In older cities, buildings are the visual focal point and building signs are small in comparison and more aesthetic then functional in their purpose. On the strip, the sign is the focal point and in many cases is as big if not bigger than the building itself. With folks now moving at fast speeds it was important for casino operators to catch people's attention well in advance to lure them in.
This is what we based all of our visual designs on for the hotels, so yes the heritage of Vegas is indeed reflected in the Strip of New Vegas.
  • Brian: I don't believe we ever had a problem with weapons feeling out of place. Inherently, we approached most weapons with the characteristics of the Fallout universe in mind. I remember we would occasionally find an arbitrary prop here and there that would seem too "modern", but those would quickly get dealt with. Once you have a room filled with items influenced by a 1950s era aesthetic, it's easy to spot a chair, rug or trash can that doesn't belong.
  • Joe: Other times we try to tack on items to give it a more improvised look and reflect the dystopian reality of the wasteland. I'll give you an example for an old shotgun; the gun stock is cracked from being dragged around the wasteland, it has been fixed with a clothes hanger wire and to replace the cushion on the butt, a sandal has been fastened to it and holding the grip onto the barrel is a screw clamp. This mix and max of odd parts, as well as the history, add the right ingredients to make it fit in a world where nothing is pristine.

The alternative universe created by the game developers diverges from our own timeline after World War II, imagining a world where dreams of robots and nuclear-powered cars came true.
    Far from ushering in a utopia, however, in Fallout, nuclear technologies led to a nightmarish collapse of organized human civilization in the United States and the rest of the globe. The Bomb is only the most obvious cause. Before the war, nuclear-fueled consumerism and unchecked mega-corporations pillaged the natural resources of the continent and poisoned the environment. (The series has never been content to poke fun at the past, but often draws unflattering comparisons to our world today.) A rampant military-industrial complex led to a garrison state, social unrest, and international tension.
    In short, the setting of Fallout is hardly an endorsement of the nuclear age. As players move through the hellscape of post-nuclear war America, they are confronted by jarring relicts of the pro-nuclear age. Advertisements for the best-selling soda before the war, Nuka-cola, are everywhere. One variant of this soda was even sold with the exciting inclusion of real radioactive isotopes. All the while, players struggle to deal with finding food and water that isn’t dangerously irradiated. Take too many doses of radiation, or “rads,” and the player’s character will die. The nuclear utopianism of the past is made to look preposterous next to its horrific consequences.
  • Blending history, science-fiction, and interesting decision-making is what makes the Fallout games modern classics. And while there is no need for the series to become full-fledged anti-nuclear weapons education materials, it would help if the latest incarnation maintained the closer connections that the older entries had to the realities of our own nuclear age. Earlier Fallout games show that a humorous treatment of nuclear weapons is possible without slipping into outright ambivalence about their implications. (And yes, one can indulge in dark satire and still be outraged by the dangers of nuclear weaponry; witness movies such as “Dr. Strangelove or: How I Learned to Stop Worrying and Love the Bomb.”) What should be clear, rather, is that repackaging nuclear weapons and technologies as entirely unproblematic makes for less-interesting decisions for players and weaker ties to the historical flavor that has underpinned the unique appeal of the games.
    And, perhaps most important of all, these sanitized representations risk teaching a misleading version of humanity’s nuclear predicament to a massive audience.
