Bengaluru

(Moved from User talk:Shreevatsa)

Shreevatsa, looking at things that way, why is the article on Mumbai NOT Bombay, Chennai NOT Madras and Kolkatta NOT Calcutta, most foreigners still refer to these cities by their old names. Wikipedia DOES NOT name articles by their ACTUAL NAME, but by their 'popular name' as per American books. Hindu-Arabic numerals was renamed to Arabic Numerals in 2006 even with majority opposition, because it was more populr among Americans. Read about the debate on the talk page. --Rsrikanth05 (talk) 07:50, 5 March 2009 (UTC) P.S: PLEASE REPLY ON MY TALK PAGE.

I suppose you're referring to my single lone comment at Talk:Bangalore (it's a bit hard to tell without context, since that was a while ago). I'm not living in Bangalore/Bengaluru right now, so I'm a bit out of touch with what's the more common name, but it seems that even Indian English-language newspapers still call it Bangalore frequenty. The case with Mumbai/Chennai/Kolkata is clearly different. I guess that "Bangalore" will become "Bengaluru" eventually on Wikipedia too; it's just too early since the new name is not the more common one. The "Hindu-Arabic numerals" thing seems unrelated, although I agree it's unfortunate that we have separate articles Arabic numerals and Hindu-Arabic numeral system now. OK, Then, I have my opinion.

See WP:INDISCRIMINATE. I know, listing key broadcasters involved in production is not indiscriminate info, maybe. however, what would you do if "channel A" in the "country B" is listed as airing the show while not airing actually, "channel C" in the "country D" aired it one year ago but not listed yet, and "channel E" in the "country F" cancelled it two months ago but not updated yet? -- JSH-alive talkcontmail 07:38, 14 March 2009 (UTC)

Adding information for the Eye-Fi page

Hi there,

You reverted some changes I made. I'm new here, so I'm not contesting, and I'll be reading on some more. While I get up to speed, I would like to know how I can make clear that certain cards to different things - some upload wirelessly to the computer, others to computer + sharing (blogging, printing etc) sites, some have geotagging and hotspot access, and some do any combination of that + video.

We've had a lot of questions about that since the release of the video cards last week.

Thanks for helping,

Caroline —Preceding unsigned comment added by Carolineateyefi (talkcontribs) 17:50, 11 March 2009 (UTC)

Re: Use of Esteems as taxis

Thanks for pointing that out. I was under the impression that the Esteem was out of production, (which in fact it is), and that's why I removed it. However, as you have showed, the Esteem is still in use and hence I see no problem with retaining it on the list. Regards, SBC-YPR (talk) 17:15, 12 March 2009 (UTC)

Regarding Transcend T.Sonic

I looked at your archived version of the article, it seems to missing alot of references. That was probably why it was deleted. Perhaps if you find more websites and reference them, the article should be able to stay. Try not to put criticisms first, start of with the facts and statements of the topic at hand. You can start recreating the article, I don't really have alot of time right now, but I'll try to help here and there. Cheers. kliu1 (talk) 23:10, 13 March 2009 (UTC)

Preview more and Save less

Hello Rsrikanth05! You have been doing good work on Transport in India. I have a feedback, you have been making several edits in quick succession, like every minute or so. This may confuse editors who track article edits by browsing the article history. It may also prevent detection of vandalism. It would be helpful to use the "Show preview" button regularly until you decide on Save. Jay (talk) 09:05, 17 March 2009 (UTC)

Yes, I am. There are more Indian admins I guess - Arvindn, Bhadani, Sundar, Utcursch, Pamri. I don't think Jay is much of an Indian name though, see Jay, Jay (surname) and Jay (given name). Jay (talk) 08:13, 20 March 2009 (UTC)

Indian numbering system

All discussions regarding the Indian numbering system, please post it here. --Rsrikanth05 (talk) 11:29, 25 March 2009 (UTC)

Indian numbering system in articles?

While editing Tata Nano I noticed numbers were written in the Indian numbering system. At first I did not realise and I thought they were simple typos, but Talk:Tata Nano#Indian English suggests that the article should use that system. As a temporary measure I have added a crude ref-note to the first few numbers to warn the reader.

For example;

When launched in March 2009 the Nano was priced at 1,23,000 Rupees (123 thousand Rps[1]), ...

Does this Wikiproject have an agreed method to display this informative note? 84user (talk) 18:17, 24 March 2009 (UTC)

Here are what some of the current India-related Featured articles use:
Ahmedabad - 440,000 and 200,000
Bangalore - 300,000 rupees
Economy of India - 785,000
West Bengal - 100,000
(I selected the last two at random) 84user (talk) 18:35, 24 March 2009 (UTC)

The Indian Numbering System

The system SHOULD BE USED IN ALL ARTICLES PERTAINING TO INDIA. As per WP:ENGVAR,
"An article on a topic that has strong ties to a particular English-speaking nation uses the appropriate variety of English for that nation." Thus, Wikipedia gives a valid reason to use the Indian numbering system. Therefore, it is appropriate for us to replace all numbers in articles like Tata Nano, Bangalore, et all. --Rsrikanth05 (talk) 11:13, 25 March 2009 (UTC)

From Nano

Article currently contains the sentence:

The new Nano Plant could have a capacity of 5,00,000 units, compared to 3,00,000 for Singur. Gujarat has also agreed to match all the incentives offered by West Bengal government.

Writing numbers as "5,00,000" or "3,00,000", is perfectly correct Indian English, but unusual for British English or American English or so on. As an Australian English speaker, I feel awfully tempted to change that to "500,000" and "300,000". Now, WP:ENGVAR suggests that "The English Wikipedia has no preference for any major national variety of the language." and "An article on a topic that has strong ties to a particular English-speaking nation uses the appropriate variety of English for that nation.". Applying those principles, should we conclude that this article, being about an Indian motor vehicle, ought to be written in Indian English, and that therefore it should indeed read "3,00,000" rather than "300,000"??? --SJK (talk) 08:26, 24 March 2009 (UTC)

Yes. As far as the article concerns Indian entity, or object or person, it should use India English and Indian numerals. Example are lengths of roads in India, et all. --Rsrikanth05 (talk) 12:18, 24 March 2009 (UTC)

I have asked here how best to display numbers at Wikipedia talk:Noticeboard for India-related topics. 84user (talk) 18:25, 24 March 2009 (UTC)
I Have replied there. I see no reason to wait for a broad concensus, as people have been doing that to revert to the american number system, at the same time, WP:ENGVAR gives a reason for the figures to be in Indian format, and ......

Q: This article pertains to a car made by a company of ___ origin...

All the rude messages go below this

Thank you for your extremely rude message, I'm sure your point is better made now. Just so you know, I made the changes not for any identity or colonialist reason, but simply for readability. And last time I checked, number and numbering aren't an "Indian subject" 83.174.61.58 (talk) 11:28, 26 March 2009 (UTC)

Rsrikanth05, regarding User talk:83.174.61.58, please stay cool, regardless of how annoying the anons edits may or may not be. If you are getting annoyed over this issue, maybe you need to take a little break, go and make a sandwich and then come back or something, same goes for anon, cheers SpitfireTally-ho! 11:42, 26 March 2009 (UTC)

Take a break if you think it is necessary, otherwise no problem, just remember, always keep a civil demeanor when dealing with edits you don't agree with. Thank you for sending me a civil and open message, as opposed to getting angry and annoyed at me. All the best SpitfireTally-ho! 11:53, 26 March 2009 (UTC)

Perhaps a <!--comment--> should be added at the top of that page requesting editors to read the talk page regarding this issue. By the way, just a suggestion feel free to ignore — you should probably stop using ALL CAPS on talk pages (that's like shouting and adds to the rudeness) and rollback [1] to revert this, as this is a content dispute not vandalism. —SV 12:01, 26 March 2009 (UTC)
I'm glad to see that you're much calmer now, I know it was a little intrusive of me to rush headlong into this issue, but I hope I have helped somewhat. Anyway, I'll now withdraw and let you resolve this, if it has not already been resolved. Also, good to see that you have added a comment at the top of the page, Cheers SpitfireTally-ho! 12:08, 26 March 2009 (UTC)
