Invitation to participate in a research

[edit]

Hello,

The Wikimedia Foundation is conducting a survey of Wikipedians to better understand what draws administrators to contribute to Wikipedia, and what affects administrator retention. We will use this research to improve experiences for Wikipedians, and address common problems and needs. We have identified you as a good candidate for this research, and would greatly appreciate your participation in this anonymous survey.

You do not have to be an Administrator to participate.

The survey should take around 10-15 minutes to complete. You may read more about the study on its Meta page and view its privacy statement .

Please find our contact on the project Meta page if you have any questions or concerns.

Kind Regards,

WMF Research Team

Question from LunaExplorer

[edit]

Thanks for being a mentor!

Could you provide me some guidance on the best course of action relating to this: Talk:UK_Infrastructure_Bank

I'm not sure whether we should create a new page or rename/rework the old page? Am I going about this the right way? LunaExplorer (talk) 19:48, 26 October 2024 (UTC)[reply]

@LunaExplorer: Hi! So long as the most recent news articles refer to the bank with its new name, I would just rename it, and rework the old page. However, if the press coverage is still using the old name, then leave the page at it's current title (For example, Twitter). Normally, a new page is not created just because the company is renamed. ARandomName123 (talk)Ping me! 21:33, 26 October 2024 (UTC)[reply]

Flavia books

[edit]

Thanks for your recent contributions to these articles. As a fan of Davis's books, my pattern has been to create a list entry on her page and a redirect when the title is announced; create a stub when the cover image is available online; add a little more to the stub when I get home from the bookshop and have the hardback in my hands, delaying the pleasure of reading it. I should add "find and add a handful of reviews".

The AfD may or may not be connected with my participation in Wikipedia:Articles for deletion/Jamila Musayeva, but it's an interesting coincidence that Kidzsearch, started by another participant, was nominated alongside. Ah well, WP:AGF, perhaps they just looked at our contributions list out of curiosity and spotted two apparently non-notable ones. PamD 06:01, 27 October 2024 (UTC)[reply]

@PamD: No problem, happy to help. I'm aware of the possible connections of the AfD, as you mentioned it here a few days ago. I'd still assume AGF, but the multiple attempted repeat votes does not give the best impression. ARandomName123 (talk)Ping me! 06:40, 27 October 2024 (UTC)[reply]

Community Wishlist: What do you make of these ideas?

[edit]

Hello, the Community Wishlist has gathered a collection of wishes and suggestions over time, highlighting the need for better support and guidance for newcomers as they create articles, while also aiming to reduce frustration and reverts. These ideas have been grouped under the Article Creation Guidance Focus Area.

Improving newcomer workflows may be of interest to you hence you are invited to help us explore these wishes, join the discussion on the focus area’s collective talk page, and cast your vote if you think the focus area will be something useful to prioritise.

Question from Ebrandt3007 (15:11, 1 November 2024)

[edit]

Hi! I hope you are doing well :) I can write and speak spanish at an intermediate level, and encountered a page that I could add to for the spanish language. I am wondering how to edit in other languages -- thanks! --Ebrandt3007 (talk) 15:11, 1 November 2024 (UTC)[reply]

@Ebrandt3007: Hi! Simply go to the Wikipedia for that language (https://es.wikipedia.org/) and begin editing in Spanish the same way you would in English. Cheers, ARandomName123 (talk)Ping me! 16:28, 1 November 2024 (UTC)[reply]

Question from Mohan1357 (05:01, 7 November 2024)

[edit]

I created a page on myself. I would like to know when it will be indexed so that it is visible to other for viewing. --Mohan1357 (talk) 05:01, 7 November 2024 (UTC)[reply]

@Mohan1357: Hi, I see that you have created it on your userpage. If you leave it there, it will not be indexed as it is a userpage, not an article. In general, new articles are started as drafts instead. That is, the beginning of the article starts with Draft:title. You can create one through the Wikipedia:Article wizard. I would move the content to a draft page, then submit it by placing {{subst:submit}} at top (please make sure you are using the source editor, not visual editor).
As a side note, writing an autobiography is highly discouraged on Wikipedia, as it is a conflict of interest. As your article is right now, it is highly unlikely it will be accepted as the tone is too promotional, and there are too little references to prove claims and notability. I highly advise reading about our guidance on autobiographies first, at Wikipedia:Autobiography. Cheers, ARandomName123 (talk)Ping me! 05:12, 7 November 2024 (UTC)[reply]
Hey thanks @ARandomName123 for your response. I have created a draft as requested and submitted for review. Could you please check and reflect? Mohan1357 (talk) 05:54, 7 November 2024 (UTC)[reply]
@Mohan1357: Please see the numerous messages on your user talk page. I can not currently see the draft, as it has been deleted. ARandomName123 (talk)Ping me! 16:46, 7 November 2024 (UTC)[reply]

Question from Brblearningcoolshit (22:28, 7 November 2024)

[edit]

Hey, just wanted to say thanks for being my mentor! I look forward to learning from you. --Brblearningcoolshit (talk) 22:28, 7 November 2024 (UTC)[reply]

@Brblearningcoolshit: Hi! Unfortunately, you seem to have been blocked due to your username. If you could please change it, that would be great! Please see your talk page for instructions. ARandomName123 (talk)Ping me! 04:09, 10 November 2024 (UTC)[reply]

Question from Ijoko Aaron Gospel (14:16, 9 November 2024)

[edit]

Hello how does creating start --Ijoko Aaron Gospel (talk) 14:16, 9 November 2024 (UTC)[reply]

@Ijoko Aaron Gospel: Hi, you can get started with learning the basics of editing by following along with the tutorial at Help:Introduction. If you're talking about creating new articles, please make sure they are notable first. There are instructions at Help:Your first article to guide you through the process. Hey, I just noticed your comment on the created article. I do have more sources but I didn't add them as it conflicts with the unambiguous advertising. But I do wanna show you if possible. Do you want to review? Nathanbyrd25 (talk) 04:44, 17 November 2024 (UTC)[reply]

@Nathanbyrd25: If it's only a couple, you can just paste them here and I'll look them over. ARandomName123 (talk)Ping me! 04:47, 17 November 2024 (UTC)[reply]
Google Knowledge Panel: https://g.co/kgs/C3mq8zy (It is generated by google only from trusted sources)
This person seems to an artist as well. I did happen to find his Spotify artist profile: https://open.spotify.com/artist/0OSjTTuzVglE32S8qUi0rw
This person also has an official artist channel on Youtube (Channel with music note) which is only possible if he is a genuine artist: https://www.youtube.com/@shirshaw64p
This person also has a verified facebook page back from 2021 when paid verification wasn't even an option. Link: https://www.facebook.com/Shirshaw64p Nathanbyrd25 (talk) 04:54, 17 November 2024 (UTC)[reply]
@Nathanbyrd25: You were right to not add those sources, as none of them are independent of the article subject. They would not contribute towards the notability of the article. ARandomName123 (talk)Ping me! 04:58, 17 November 2024 (UTC)[reply]
Yes, Thank you. But one thing is for sure. This person is notable enough. As per the references, one of them was a TV interview of a Bangladeshi News Channel. Some of the news were totally independent and verified. So could you consider publishing? I can keep looking for more references and add it on the way. Thanks. Nathanbyrd25 (talk) 05:01, 17 November 2024 (UTC)[reply]
Verified as in I did contact with the publishers to identify if it is legitimate or not. As the claim to be youngest ethical hacker from a country does seem a big deal and without verification anyone can claim to be who they are. Nathanbyrd25 (talk) 05:04, 17 November 2024 (UTC)[reply]
@Nathanbyrd25: TV interviews with the article subject also would not count as independent sources. Being the youngest ethical hacker from a certain country does not mean they deserve an article, it depends on how much independent coverage they receive.
As for publishing, I would wait for another reviewer to review the article. If I had intended to review it, I would have included the comment with the decision, instead of just leaving it alone as it is now. ARandomName123 (talk)Ping me! 05:07, 17 November 2024 (UTC)[reply]
Got it. Thanks for your time. Nathanbyrd25 (talk) 05:09, 17 November 2024 (UTC)[reply]

ArbCom 2024 Elections voter message

[edit]

Hello! Voting in the 2024 Arbitration Committee elections is now open until 23:59 (UTC) on Monday, 2 December 2024. All eligible users are allowed to vote. Users with alternate accounts may only vote once.

The Arbitration Committee is the panel of editors responsible for conducting the Wikipedia arbitration process. It has the authority to impose binding solutions to disputes between editors, primarily for serious conduct disputes the community has been unable to resolve. This includes the authority to impose site bans, topic bans, editing restrictions, and other measures needed to maintain our editing environment. The arbitration policy describes the Committee's roles and responsibilities in greater detail.

If you wish to participate in the 2024 election, please review the candidates and submit your choices on the voting page. If you no longer wish to receive these messages, you may add {{NoACEMM}} to your user talk page. MediaWiki message delivery (talk) 00:48, 19 November 2024 (UTC)[reply]

Question from Durajoin (17:49, 25 November 2024)

[edit]

I would like to create reputed company pages on wiki. how can i do it? --Durajoin (talk) 17:49, 25 November 2024 (UTC)[reply]

@Durajoin: You would first need to determine whether the company is notable. Are there multiple, non-routine news articles on them? If so, they could be notable. See Wikipedia:Notability (organizations and companies) for more detailed criteria. Once you have determined notability, you can start a draft through the Wikipedia: Article wizard. Please remember that it is mandatory to disclose any conflict of interest you may have. ARandomName123 (talk)Ping me! 22:54, 25 November 2024 (UTC)[reply]

[edit]

Hello ARandomName123. I have seen other users, like HJ Mitchell along with other editors, who have customized their name into a specific color, size, or font. I am interested in doing that for myself. How can I do it? Thanks. --OneTrueKingLives (talk) 08:15, 26 November 2024 (UTC)[reply]

@OneTrueKingLives: Hi, go to Special:Preferences and scroll down until you see "Signature". Enter your new signature as wiki markup, and click save. Cheers, ARandomName123 (talk)Ping me! 19:35, 26 November 2024 (UTC)[reply]

Question from Fyukfy5 on Talk:Israel (20:28, 26 November 2024)

[edit]

Yo, how can I correctly post my vote on the Rfc in the correct format? --Fyukfy5 (talk) 20:28, 26 November 2024 (UTC)[reply]

@Fyukfy5: Votes on RfCs (and nearly all edits, for that matter) related to the Israel-Palestine conflict are restricted to 30 day old accounts that have more than 500 edits to prevent abuse. Your account does not meet those requirements, so your votes will be reverted by other editors to enforce this restriction. ARandomName123 (talk)Ping me! 20:35, 26 November 2024 (UTC)[reply]
For votes unrelated, simply state whether you're opposing or supporting, along with a rationale and your signature. i.e. '''Support''': Because... ~~~~ ARandomName123 (talk)Ping me! 20:36, 26 November 2024 (UTC)[reply]

Thank you

@Raidameir: Hi, sorry for the late response. When you are in editing mode, the toolbar at the top should have a button that says "Cite". Question from CSDACCAD (17:04, 5 December 2024)

[edit]

Hi, I am trying to add content to Wikipedia as our non-profit organizaiton is not listed. Is the right process to create an "article" for the Society or is there a listing template to list our organization's mandate and other related information? I am not sure if this is the right place to do this. --CSDACCAD (talk) 17:04, 5 December 2024 (UTC)[reply]

@CSDACCAD: Hi, if you are looking to create an article, you can do so through the Wikipedia:Articles for Creation process. Please remember to disclose your conflict of interest, and keep in mind that the article should be neutral, and based on reliable, independent sources. ARandomName123 (talk)Ping me! 00:18, 6 December 2024 (UTC)[reply]

Question from CSDACCAD (17:09, 5 December 2024)

HI again here is a link to a similar organizaiton that the Canadian Society of Decorative Arts would like to use as a template but not sure if I am in teh right place to fill this out? https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Craft_Ontario Gilles --CSDACCAD (talk) 17:09, 5 December 2024 (UTC)[reply]

@CSDACCAD: I would not consider that the best article to base yours off of, since most of the citations are to sources directly related to the organizations. On Wikipedia, we would prefer if the sources are independent (i.e. news reports, studies, books, etc). To get started writing an article, you can begin a draft at the Wikipedia:Article Wizard. Hello, how can I leave a request to create an article or ask a famous (awarded, etc) editor to create a big article? --B255555555 (talk) 14:51, 7 December 2024 (UTC)[reply]

@B255555555: You can do so at Wikipedia:Requested articles, However, that page is rarely monitored, and it would be faster for you to just write the article yourself. Cheers, ARandomName123 (talk)Ping me! 20:19, 7 December 2024 (UTC)[reply]

Question from Shivam B. Sutar (14:52, 8 December 2024)

Question from Matija Mosunic (16:05, 22 December 2024)

[edit]

Hello, I began a page for Olib, Croatia around 2010 under the name MatijaOlib. I have been unable to retrieve my login information for the last year. I see others have deleted a photo from this site which I took and which was active on the page from 2010 to 2023. It was named Olib.png. Can this be reversed? Thank you so much! Matija Mosunic --Matija Mosunic (talk) 16:05, 22 December 2024 (UTC)[reply]

Sorry, the username was Matijaolib. I believe I was blocked from editing or someone took over this name. I took the olib.png photo in 2005. I think I started the Olib, Croatia English page around that time. My family is from here and had been there since the 15th Century. I have used a VPN which may have caused an editing block on this username? Again, any help you can provide is appreciated! Matija Matija Mosunic (talk) 16:30, 22 December 2024 (UTC)[reply]
I found it and the photo. It took a few tries to reset my pw for Matijaolib. I’m not sure if it was a bot or a human which removed the photo but I will edit and ask questions as necessary. Thanks!! Matija Mosunic (talk) 16:41, 22 December 2024 (UTC)[reply]
@Matija Mosunic: Hi, glad you were able to get it resolved! There's a couple of old talk page messages at User talk:Matijaolib, which may be informative.
