Justin.tv is a website that allows users to produce and watch live streaming video. Like YouTube, Justin.tv user accounts are called "channels", and users are encouraged to broadcast a wide variety of user-generated live video content, called "broadcasts".

The company is an Internet startup based in San Francisco, California, with seed funding from Paul Graham of seed capital firm Y Combinator and Series A funding with Alsop Louie Partners and Draper Associates

Justin.tv is notable for its origin: The original Justin.tv was a single channel featuring founder Justin Kan, who broadcast his life 24/7 and popularized the term lifecasting. In 2007, Justin Kan stopped broadcasting and Justin.tv relaunched into its current form as a network of thousands of various channels.

Users are permitted to broadcast to an unlimited number of people for free, and watching broadcasts does not require user registration. Broadcasts that are considered to contain potentially offensive content are available only to registered users over the age of 18. Broadcasts containing defamation, pornography, copyright violations, and material encouraging criminal conduct is prohibited by Justin.tv's terms of service.

Company history

Lifecasting origins

The original Justin.tv was a single channel featuring Justin Kan. Wearing a webcam attached to a baseball cap and streamed online via a laptop-backpack system designed by co-founder Kyle Vogt, Kan decided he would wear the camera 24/7, and he began streaming continuous live video and audio at midnight March 19, 2007.

The novelty of the concept attracted media attention, and Kan interviewed with Ann Curry on the Today Show (April 2, 2007), Tom Merritt on the first episode of CNET Live, Nightline (April 6, 2007) and World News Tonight (April 8, 2007). His lifecasting project has been compared to EDtv, Being John Malkovich, and The Truman Show.

Expansion into platform

In the summer of 2007, Justin.tv became a platform for more than 60 different channels. Beginning July 21, 2007, channels were listed by popularity, starting with the most popular on the left. The Directory at the top of each channel showed which channels were live and which were not broadcasting. Depending on the entry time, a visitor might have seen only a small selection of the available channels.

By August 2007, channels were being added at an average rate of two a day, with content covering both lifecasters and event streaming. The international locations range from Australia, Brazil, the United Kingdom, and France to the Netherlands and Sweden. In some cases, a lifecaster might travel from one country to another, as was the case when Lisa Batey traveled from Brooklyn to Tokyo and Kyoto in 2007 and 2008. Not all the participants have mobile equipment, however, and most simply transmit an image of themselves sitting at their computer. During this same time frame, singer-songwriter Jody Marie Gnant and others began lifecasting independent of Justin tv on Ustream and elsewhere.

On October 2, 2007, Justin.tv became an open network, allowing members of the public to register and broadcast. By April 10, 2008, Kan stated in an Interview with Tom Merritt that Justin.tv had signed 30,000 broadcasting accounts.

On March 14, 2008, Justin.tv added selectable Categories for broadcasters including: Featured, People & Lifecasting, Sports, Music & Radio, Gaming, News & Tech, Animals, Entertainment, Divas & Dudes.

On Friday, June 27, 2008, Justin.tv added networks to the site, in which the user could make their own network with a forum, and officers that would act as moderators for the network. On Thursday, March 25, 2010, these networks were removed from the site.

On Monday, October 27, 2008, Justin.tv added Headlines which allows users to make reports on other broadcasters doing interesting things on the site, which then becomes edited and published for all users on the website to read and comment.

For ease of use, a simplified redesign was introduced July 14, 2009.

On Monday, April 5, 2010, Justin.tv changed the design of their archive page, renaming them to Past Broadcast's. Essentially all past broadcasts are saved as a clip, and deleted after 7 days. From the Past Broadcast you can highlight for permanent save.

Technology

Justin.tv's broadcasting and viewing technology is based on Adobe Flash, a browser plug-in found in 95% of all personal computers, and available for many of today's widely-used operating systems.

Users can broadcast directly from the site, with Justin.tv using Flash to auto-detect and stream from an attached webcam. Justin.tv also supports broadcasting using other third party software, most notably QuickTime Broadcaster, Camtwist, Flash Media Encoder, Wirecast, and VLC, to allow broadcasters to add effects or stream higher quality video.

Justin.tv has no default video quality setting; instead, it sets bitrate on a case-by-case basis by testing the broadcaster's available bandwidth. The broadcaster can also manually adjust the bitrate before going live. While broadcasting from the browser, the maximum quality settings are 1000 kbps for video and 44 kHz for audio. As a comparison, YouTube High Quality video are 400-500 kbps, and 720p high definition video is approximately 2000 kbps. The 1000 kbps limit can be exceeded by using alternate broadcasting methods, such as Flash Media Encoder and Quicktime Broadcaster, and 720p video in H.264 has been broadcast by some users.

Following the Justin.tv re-design in July 2009, the default channel video size changed from a standard aspect ratio of 468 x 353 pixels to a widescreen 630 x 353 pixels.

Content accessibility

Like YouTube and other static video sites, Justin.tv allows each channel to be accompanied with an HTML snippet, which allows users to embed video onto pages outside the Justin.tv site. Another snippet is given to embed the associated chatbox as well, thus allowing users to recreate the basic Justin.tv functionality on another page. Broadcasters have the option of disabling embedding for their specific channel.

Following the release of the API in August 2009, Justin.tv released Flash SWF files that allows developers to include Justin.tv video in Flash projects.

Localization

While the primary Justin.tv site is in English, there is support for users to translate the site into other languages. 2 languages (Catalan and Spanish) have been translated completely, and an additional 17 are over 50% translated.

Criticisms

Copyright

Justin.tv has been criticized for failing to ensure that its videos respect the law of copyright. Although Justin.tv complies with the Digital Millennium Copyright Act, the nature of live broadcasting makes it difficult to take down streams in a timely manner.

In August 2009, Justin.tv announced a deal with Fox to actively filter streams in real-time.

Justin.tv now uses an advanced filtering system from Vobile to detect and filter out any copyrighted content, and remove the channel from the website.

Lifecasting pranks

During the period when Justin.tv consisted solely of Justin Kan lifecasting, Justin became the target of several pranks. A viewer spoofed Justin's caller ID (publicly available on the site) using an IP Relay service. On March 21, 2007, the spoofer called the San Francisco Police Department and filed a false report about a stabbing in the apartment. The following day, someone reported a fire at the apartment. The San Francisco emergency services then put Justin.tv's number on a list which requires a confirmation call before responding to any emergencies. Kan changed his number and kept the new one private.

Security

In July 2008, TheDefaced.org, a computer security group, released a non-malicious cross-site scripting (XSS) worm onto the Justin.tv site. After successfully propagating the virus, TheDefaced.org contacted Justin.tv programmers and worked with them to fix the vulnerability.

Abusive users

On November 19, 2008, 19-year-old Abraham K. Biggs committed suicide while broadcasting to a room full of viewers on his Justin.tv channel by ingesting an overdose of benzodiazepine and opiates. He was also struggling with bipolar disorder. Biggs posted his suicide note online, as noted in The New York Times:

Much of the evidence of Mr. Biggs’s suicide and the reactions of users was removed from BodyBuilding.com and Justin.tv after his death was confirmed. But according to a chronology posted by a fellow user, Mr. Biggs listed the pills he had obtained and posted a suicide note that he had copied from another Web site. He directed people to his page on Justin.tv, where anyone can plug in a webcam and stream live video onto the Internet. In a chat room adjacent to the live video, the “joking and trash talking” continued after Mr. Biggs consumed the pills and lay on his bed, according to the user, who said he tried to reach the local police from his home in India.

The man's father, Abraham Biggs, Sr., says those who watched share some blame in his son’s death.

Justin.tv CEO Michael Seibel stated, "We regret that this has occurred and respect the privacy of the broadcaster and his family during this time. We have policies in place to discourage the distribution of distressing content and our community monitors the site accordingly. This content was flagged by our community, reviewed and removed according to our terms of service.”

radio network. It was launched on January 1, 1992 under the original banner of "SportsRadio ESPN." ESPN Radio is located at ESPN headquarters in Bristol, Connecticut.  The network airs a regular schedule of daily and weekly programming as well as live coverage of Major League Baseball, National Basketball Association, Bowl Championship Series, and National Invitation Tournament games. ESPN Radio is broadcast to hundreds of affiliate stations as well as to subscribers of Sirius Satellite Radio and XM Satellite Radio in the United States and Canada.

ESPN Radio currently has five company-owned stations in New York City, Los Angeles, Chicago, Dallas, and Pittsburgh. Most other markets have ESPN Radio affiliates, whether they be part-time or have their entire format dedicated to ESPN Radio. The Walt Disney Company did not include the ESPN Radio network or the Radio Disney network in the recent sale of ABC Radio to Citadel Broadcasting. However, ESPN Radio as well as its Spanish counterpart ESPN Deportes Radio are still considered to be a part of the Citadel Media family because Citadel sells the advertising time on both services.

History

ESPN Radio launched on January 4, 1992. Keith Olbermann hosted the first program. The top story that night was that Danny Tartabull signed with the New York Yankees as a free agent.

At first, ESPN Radio broadcast only on weekends. By 1996, it expanded to weekdays with a show hosted by The Fabulous Sports Babe, Nancy Donnellan. One hour of that show was simulcast on ESPN2 (1-2 p.m. Eastern time). Two years later, Mike Greenberg and Mike Golic were brought together for a new morning show, which still airs today (and is also simulcast on ESPN2). By that time, Donnellan was gone and Dan Patrick replaced her. That show lasted until Patrick left ESPN in 2007.

Gradually, ESPN added more dayparts and became a 24-hour service.

In 1995, ESPN Radio gained national radio rights to the NBA. In 1997, it gained the rights to MLB on national radio.

History

Formation

Junkyard Jane's beginnings can be traced back to 1997, when the bands Cobalt Hook, The Generators, and a newly formed all-female group merged. When Stoops replaced the guitarist for the girl band, the three ensambles joined forces and became Junkyard Jane, with founding members being Leanne Trevalyan, Billy Stoops, Barbra Blue, Susan Orfield and Chris Leighton.

You should state your point instead of attempting to prove it experimentally. If you find fault with such precedents, you should either raise the issue on the WP:UCFD talk page, or (since the phrase "per precedent" is just a shorthand for "per arguments previously stated") express your qualms in the context of particular discussions, when those precedents are mentioned. Request for peer review

Hi, I saw your name on the wikipedia:peer review volunteer page. I'm currently working on a science article called the Kardashev Scale, the page has gone through a lot of changes in the last 3 months, some of them reverts that I wish to overturn. I've sent out some notices to people who have worked on the page previously but I'm having problems getting open opinions and feedback. Their ideas about what they want the article to be about and look like are pretty set. I need outside opinion.

In my opinion the Kardashev scale has 3 primary interests:

• 1) A benchmark used by Seti scientists in there search for extraterrestrials
• 2) A catch-all vocabulary term for a scale used by scientists, in classifying advanced civilizations. This has important implications when speculating on sociological structures of advanced civilizations. But also, it is a necessary analysis when talking what about clues might be left behind or generated by alien species; which then might lead the the discovery of extraterrestrials.
• 3) Because it is can be used for the speculation of advanced civilizations it is a magnet for those interested in science fiction. Not many science fiction writers actually talk about the scale or the power generated by fiction species in power(WATTS) terms, but science fiction enthusiasts are interested in the Kardashev Scale.

My primary goals are in advancing the content area of number 2 and diminishing the fictional content. After all, it is a scientific not a fictional topic. My secondary goals are to find and add published content on the extension of the scale. The feedback I have gotten is pretty much divided between goals 1 or 3. And I don't want to create a editing war!

So please read the article and the discussion page and tell me what you think!!

• 1)Is the article presently fine the way it is?
• 2)After you read it, did you get the impression that it was a science article or a science fiction article?
• 3)Was it too long, too short, easy to understand?
• 4)Was the article interesting, was it boring, did it feel jumbled or was it concise?

Peer review idea

Hi, I have made a proposal that no peer review request be archived without some response. To aid in this, there is a new list of PR requests at least one week old that have had no repsonses beyond a semi-automated peer review. This list is at Wikipedia:Peer review/backlog.

There are just over 100 names on the PR volunteers page, so I figure if each of these volunteers reviewed just one or two PR requests without a response from the list each month, it would easily take care of the "no response" backlog (as there have been 2 or 3 such unanswered requests a day on average).

If you would be able to help out with a review or two a month from the "no responses" backlog list that would be great (and much appreciated). Please discuss questions, comments, or ideas at the PR talk page and thanks in advance for your help, Ruhrfisch _><>°^° 00:22, 16 March 2008 (UTC)

This seems so entirely reasonable that I cannot think of a workable excuse to weasel out of it. I did put my name on the list of volunteers, but have not looked back on the project on any sort of a regular basis. I will give it a go as soon as time permits. I do work a seasonal business, so my input to the wikipedia project as a whole is likely to be much less during the spring months. Explain Why My Derby Posts Are Being Edited? : Explained

I attempted to assist my wife start up a Derby league locally. The local WFTDA League came out in force to our rink, which was located over 45 minutes drive away from them, two towns away from them. They scared off any girls that were interested by Intimidation Efforts, Bullying, they swiped at the skates of one of our girls who was just LEARNING TO SKATE! And it was done at a Public Skating Session at a neutral rink?! These people are hooligans... thugs... Not Derby. Hell, their own Derby Association would shut them down if they knew what they had done. Anyway, I'm not even naming names on my post just stating facts. Why are you removing them? I assume that 8-Bit talked to you and that is why you felt it necessary to 'do something about it' but I am not sure why. I thought that Wikipedia was about facts, and that is what I stated. I didn't whine or bitch, I stated "FACTS"... so kindly explain why you removed it, or I will just place it again? Thanks

Welcome to wikipedia. Nobody talked to me about your edits, I have some Derby related articles on my watchlist. So I saw the previous edits. My removal of your contributions should not be taken as a personal affront or as any dispute of wether your statements are factual. I removed them because they were not composed in a manner one would expect for statements of fact in an encyclopedia article; they are about a dispute and are therefore controversial, or at least about a controversy, but did not have citations to a primary source (for example a newspaper, magazine article or some other source). If you witnessed a noteworthy event that has not been reported elsewhere, then the facts of that event might not get included in a wikipedia article until it is reported elsewhere. Others have had complaints about specific teams removed from articles, and I think it is likely that these concerns taken together may indicate that a newsworthy story is going unnoticed by published media accounts. However, until the facts are reported in a publication which could be cited as a reference, then those statements do not pass the verifiability requirement of wikipedia. If you would like to start a new article about the Old School Derby Association, and include in that article the disagreements and personality conflicts which have lead to separate league associations, then that could be a great article. Be sure to attach citations to references for each statement of fact, and have the references before you post the new article for the first time, and I'll bet that article would withstand a notability challenge. I didn't realize the full spectrum of what wikipedia actually was. I have done more research now, sorry for my newbishness, and I have furthered a discussion on the TALK page for the League of Derby stuff. I will attempt to 'stick to the rules' so that I can get the information that NEEDS to be there... there. I seriously assumed that you had removed the sentence in question because or personal issues of some sort and I apologize if my response was rather heated. This is a topic that I feel needs to be out there. I guess I should contact our local news media and get the story to them so I CAN get it on wikipedia... lol. Ugh! We just wanted to leave a warning for future leagues somewhere that they might find it. I don't plan on maintaining the domain name for our league now that it is dead... but maybe I should? I don't know... Sorry for the emotion involved, but we put our heart and souls into this league, and what happened to it is just sad for all who were involved. Request for Peer Review help

Thank you for you work as a peer review volunteer. Since March, there has been a concerted effort to make sure all peer review requests get some response. Requests that have gone three days or longer without a substantial response are listed at Wikipedia:Peer review/backlog. I have three requests to help this continue.

1) If you are asked to do a peer review, please ask the person who made the request to also do a review, preferably of a request that has not yet had feedback. This is fairly simple, but helps. For example when I review requests on the backlog list, I close with Hope this helps. If my comments are useful, please consider peer reviewing an article, especially one at Wikipedia:Peer review/backlog (which is how I found this article). Yours, ...

2) While there are several people who help with the backlog, lately I have been doing up to 3 or 4 peer reviews a day and can not keep this up much longer. We need help. Since there are now well over 100 names on the PR volunteers page, if each volunteer reviewed just one PR request without a response from the list each month, it would easily take care of the "no response" backlog. To help spread out the load, I suggest those willing pick a day of the month and do a review that day (for example, my first edit was on the 8th, so I could pick the 8th). Please pick a peer review request with no responses yet, if possible off the backlog list. If you want, leave a note on my talk page as to which day you picked and I will remind you each month.

3) I have made some proposals to add some limits to peer review requests at Wikipedia_talk:Peer_review#Proposed_limits. The idea is to prevent any one user from overly burdening the process. These seem fairly reasonable (one PR request per editor per day, only four total PR requests per editor at a time, PR requests with cleanup banners can be delisted (like GAN quick fail), and wait two weeks to relist a PR request after it is archived), but have gotten no feedback in one week. If you have any thoughts on these, please weigh in.

Derby POV Changes

Mr. Swassing, there are roughly 3 different users ElektraViolette, GCRG2006, and I forget the other (I could have misspelled the ones I placed here) and they are making changes that are strictly POV. I cut-n-pasted the information you gave me when I started doing POV changes, and they have disregarded these and continued making changes. Since you seem much more Wikipedia confident would you mind having a look at the changes being made and see what we can do to stop this? They are changing the listing of the Green Country Roller Girls FROM Broken Arrow TO Tulsa despite their Home (and ONLY) rink being located in Broken Arrow. They are also making changes to the T-Town Derby Grrls listing, either removing it completely or adjusting it to state that the membership of the GCRG is in Tulsa. What are the appropriate actions? Saturday night live

Hi, I will delete the category Category:Saturday Night Live alumni you created per Wikipedia:Categories for discussion/Log/2007 February 28#Category:Saturday Night Live people. These five people were not the only ones commenting on it, It was quite a large discussion debate in Wikipedia (can't find the link anymore) which lead to Wikipedia:Overcategorization. Basically these kind of categories were getting out of hand. Some articles had about 30 or more of those categories. Cast members of general hospital, Cast members of Santa Barbara, Cast members of Star wars, Cast members of saturday night live etc. Personally I don't really like the ethnicity categories myself, but at least they don't clutter the page as bad. I am sorry that you did so much work for nothing, but better to stop it now then later when even more work would have gone into it. Garion96 (talk) 16:59, 10 October 2008 (UTC)

What is getting out of hand is the way that the work of volunteer contributers is deleted by overzealous administrators applying policies decided on obscure discussion boards by a small group. Invitation to Meetup/Seattle6, a focus group

Hello. I'm part of a research group at the University of Washington (Seattle campus), and my group is reaching out to Wikipedians in the Puget Sound area. We're hosting a focus group designed to gather information on what Wikipedians would like to know about each other when interacting on Wikipedia. Our end goal is to create an embedded application that helps people quickly know more about others' history and activity on Wikipedia, and we feel our design will be much more useful if it's based on insights of users like you.

I'm hoping that the chance to help out local researchers, to engage in lively face-to-face discussion with other Seattle Wikipedians, and to contribute to Wikipedia in a new way will entice you to join us. The session lasts 2 hours and snacks are provided - one is April 8 (Wednesday) starting at 6 pm and the other is April 18 (Saturday) starting at 10 am. (Sessions will be held on UW Seattle campus - directions will be sent after registration.) Your contribution will be greatly appreciated!

Do I have this right, you want to schedule 2 hours at the UW and are offering snacks. What are the snacks?

Let me just give you $0.02 U.S. straight up: most wikipedians are either socially maladjusted Eagle Scouts or dotty Englishmen. Editing wikipedia articles is like trainspotting for the later, and similar to building park benches for the former. There are other varieties of wikipedian: there is the public relations hack who views an opportunity to edit an online encyclopedia as just another place to shill for their corporate/religious/political overlords; and then there are those who are interested in, and familiar with, the subject matter they write about. But the last group are quickly discouraged by the attempts of the Eagle Scouts to make Sysop, and by the shameless promotion by the corporate/religious/political hacks. But they can be easily re-encouraged by a friendly dotty Englishman.

Figuring out who is who is pretty easy already. Just look at their history of contributions.

Spokane, Washington and Father's Day

In reference to this, it would seem that the inhabitants of Spokane are proud of being the birthplace of the holiday and that they consider it part of their cultural heritage, so the category would arguibily adequate. --Enric Naval (talk) 06:19, 15 June 2009 (UTC)

I'll go along with the "arguably adequate" assertion, and will not bother the article further. However, if a limited number of categories are to be applied, I don't really think that the "culture of Spokane" is among the most useful ways of organizing the categorization of an article on "Fathers day." While the origin of the event would be a useful item within the body of the article. - Michael J Swassing (talk) 15:50, 15 June 2009 (UTC)

The Spokane origin is already in the article, but, unfortunately, the cultural influence in Spokane is neither mentioned nor sourced and I already have too much in my hands to search for it :-( Let's see if one day I can do that, and then I'll restore the cat.
