Draft
[edit]Would anyone mind if I moved my userspace draft to this page? This is not meant as an advertisement for my version, though it is in table format (allowing sorting by country as well as by ratio), has more notes for alternative flags/ratios, and has sources. If no-one replies (which I frankly wouldn't find odd) I'll assume no-one minds. SiBr4 (talk) 20:31, 25 March 2014 (UTC)
Done. SiBr4 (talk) 16:27, 3 April 2014 (UTC)
Actually Not done. Wikipedia won't let me save it because it contains a link to an archive.is page and identifies the edit as "potentially unconstructive". SiBr4 (talk) 16:31, 3 April 2014 (UTC)
All ratios are inconsistent
[edit]E.g. "1:2 (2)" is height:width. 1:2=1/2=0.5 != 2.
I'm not saying we should go with "2:1 (2)" (width:height), but it would fit some (all?) comments in the "Sources and notes"-column, over say "1:2 (0.5)".
Having a note about this seems worse than just fixing either way.. Which is better? No *one* source, for an individual flag can an authority on correct ratio here.. comp.arch (talk) 13:22, 28 May 2015 (UTC)
- To me, "1:2 (2)" does not imply a claim that 1/2 = 2; ratios and fractions are strictly not the same thing, and parentheses do not necessarily indicate numeric equality. Of your two proposed alternatives, though, I prefer the first, since the decimal representations would still be greater than one for virtually all flags, and I think 1.5/1.6/1.667 is more easily understood than 0.667/0.625/0.6. Another option could be to use ratios for both representations by changing the decimal numbers to ratios of the form 1:x, e.g. "2:3 (1:1.5)". SiBr4 (talk) 19:03, 29 May 2015 (UTC)
Height:Width used rather than Width:Height
[edit]Why is Height:Width used rather than Width:Height? The latter is the usual form, at least for videography and photography. For example, 16:9 is a common aspect ratio for HD television. Dominican Republic?
[edit]Flag doesn't seem to be correctly proportioned — Preceding unsigned comment added by 2601:186:4301:20E:6446:B465:5CEB:A72D (talk) 03:38, 10 December 2018 (UTC)
Tibet
[edit]Please remove the Tibetan flag! It is a defunct military flag adopted by the government in exile, which is not recognized by any state, souvereign or not. It has no ties to current Tibet. All other disputed territories like Abkhazia, Transnistria, Kosovo, Northern Cyprus or the Republic of China on Taiwan are somewhat justifiable since they maintain de facto control over the territory they claim. That is certainly not the case with Tibet. Tibet is fully integrated into China as an autonomous region. Provinces in China simply don't have flags. Keep in mind that the article's title is "List of aspect ratios of national flags". You might as well add every flag of any territory in any shape and form that was ever in use. Wikipedia oughtn't to promote a political agenda. Please stick to the facts. --94.134.89.2 (talk) 18:04, 23 May 2019 (UTC)
I agree, Tibet is neither a Sovereign state not control over any territory, adding Tibet would tempt people adding other spurious flags such as the Gay and Lesbian Kingdom of the Coral Sea Islands or Sealand GaryTalk to me 01:41, 13 February 2021 (UTC) — Preceding unsigned comment added by Antalope (talk • contribs)

Irrational ratios
[edit]Under Togo it says "... making the flag of Togo one of two national flags with irrational proportions (the other being that of Nepal)". Yet farther down we see Iran also has (officially) a ratio that is also irrational. 69.161.125.36 (talk) 20:08, 3 August 2022 (UTC)
Stop adding the article back
[edit]@ClareWhitePlane, this is the third time you have brought the article back despite there being consensus to convert it to a redirect. Please see Wikipedia:Articles for deletion/List of aspect ratios of national flags or start a new discussion to bring the article back. Reverting the article again despite established consensus will make you guilty of edit warring. ―Howard • 🌽33 11:59, 29 November 2024 (UTC)
