Art
[edit]If we ever create an Amarna art page, the last para here ought to get moved to it. Noel 19:48, 10 Aug 2003 (UTC)
Location
[edit]So... Where in Egypt is it?
Akhetaton, the Horizon of the Aton.
[edit]There is a strong possibility that the volcano Santorini erupted during the reign of Akhenaton. The massive fallout cloud must have interrupted the usual weather conditions causing a plague.
There is an early prayer to Aton "who drives away the darkness". So with the arrival of blackout conditions there is a considerable change to worshiping of Aton to get the sunshine back. A further clue is the name of the barge build for Queen Tiye, a generation earlier, "The Aton Gleams" ("The Sunshine Boat").
With the arrival of the plague Akhenaton builds himself a whole new, temporary, quarantine city where he worships only Aton, the sunshine god. When it is reasonably certain that the plague has run its course and weather back to normal, the city is simply abandoned.
The plague may also account for the disappearance of several members of the Amarna family. If as now seems certain, Tutankhamun died of Malaria, perhaps he was the last royal victim of a last sporadic outbreak of the malarial plague.
Life in Ancient Akhetaten
[edit]I am going to begin a section entitled "Life in Ancient Akhetaten." I've never created a new section on a wiki page, so tips are welcome. I'm going to start with a little bit of a data dump and then synthesize it over time. Please help out in that respect if you can, and I look forward to any comments. Cheers. - I will continue adding stuff to this section over time. The writing is pretty remedial at this point...will fix eventually, unless someone else is up to it.Jasonnewyork (talk) 17:25, 11 June 2012 (UTC)
incorrect name?!
[edit]Why is 'tell el amarna' incorrect? This is an unsourced statement which should be removed. --عبد المؤمن (talk) 22:03, 28 February 2013 (UTC)
