Etymology

Partly from Middle Low German tōvallich, tōvellich from tōval (occasion, instance) + -ich and partly from tillfälle +‎ -ig. Cognate with, but with a different meaning than, Danish tilfældig, Norwegian tilfeldig, German zufällig and Dutch toevallig.
