Etymology

From earlier makokoro, from () (ma, true) + (こころ) (kokoro, heart).[1][2] The kokoro changes to gokoro as an instance of rendaku (連濁).

First attested in Ochikubo Monogatari, written some time in the late 10th century.[1]
