From Proto-Tai *ɓoːtᴰ. Cognate with Lao ບອດ (bǭt), Northern Thai ᨷᩬᨯ, ᦢᦸᧆᧈ (ḃoad¹), Shan မွတ်ႇ (màut) or ဝွတ်ႇ (wàut), Ahom 𑜈𑜨𑜄𑜫 (bot), Tày bót. Compare Proto-Austronesian *buCa (whence Malay buta and Hiligaynon buta).
